Black Street Early Childhood Center (BSECC) is helping all students develop the world class skills and life and career characteristics of the Profile of the Graduate by creating an environment that promotes curiosity, exploration and self-expression and where children are encouraged to become actively engaged in their own learning. We have a remarkable staff of professionals that are helping all students develop the world class skills and life and career characteristics of the Profile of the Graduate by meeting individual students' needs. The needs might be academic, social emotional, physical, or a combination of them. We do our best to meet them all. Prekindergarten and Kindergarten teachers work diligently with individual children, small groups and whole group, meanwhile differentiating instruction and using best practices to meet student needs. Kindergarten teachers focus on a workshop model when instructing students. We have phonics workshop, reading workshop, writing workshop, and a math workshop where student's individual needs are being met. Prekindergarten teachers focus on the social emotional skills that will allow our students to meet the rigor of the profile of a South Carolina graduate. This is done through purposeful play and helping students become communicators, critical thinkers, and problem solvers. Related Arts opportunities for all our students include the "Discovery Room", where students are involved with exploration and inquiry into science and math, Media, Physical Education, Computer Lab, Creative Movement, and Art. Field trips were planned strategically to support lessons being taught in the classroom which enabled students to make life connections with their learning.
Our teachers communicate with parents through newsletters, Class Dojo, emails, and texts. During the pandemic, our teachers were diligent in their communication with parents. They had office hours where parents could contact them with questions or concerns. They met with parents through google meet to review expectations for students who were attending school virtually. Our parents are actively engaged in literacy nights, nutrition nights, college and career week, and Read across America. This year they were engaged virtually with the activities and attendance at these meetings was awesome. The backbone to our parental involvement is the Parent Teacher Organization, whose members have been tremendously helpful with time, talent and resources. They have supported the school by enhancing and providing activities and school celebrations.
We thank our students, staff, parents, and community for a spectacular school year!
