Woodruff Middle School is helping all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by providing a positive, innovative, and nurturing school environment in which students achieve academic success and evolve into life-long learners. WMS believes that student achievement is attained through high expectations, academic rigor, and a solid work ethic. Because of this belief, WMS Cubs are consistently striving to be “On the P.R.O.W. L.” or to be Prepared, Responsible, Outstanding, Wolverine, Leaders. This theme is not only embraced by students but by faculty members, parents, and a close knit community that dedicate themselves daily to the bright and emergent futures of our students. The students at WMS benefit from instructional rigor, an emphasis on character and career development, and extracurricular activities that encourage interpersonal skills.
Woodruff Middle School has a strong academic core that is driven by scholastic rigor, inquiry, and project based learning. This is evidenced in our students’ achievements and accomplishments. 100% of our students passed the End of Course examination in Algebra I and English I. 7 eighth grade students were identified as Junior Scholars. 5 seventh grade students qualified for and participated in the Duke Talent Identification Program. 22 students participated in the Citizen Scholar program. 92 students were inducted into the National Junior Beta Club. Approximately 302 students were recognized for maintaining an A or A/B average for the year. 100% of our students were presented with one-to-one technology this year via the use of chromebooks. Teachers and students alike eagerly learned new technology together as they corresponded both in person and virtually this school year.
At WMS, students engage in interactive, real world programs by taking a career assessment test in which they study career paths and research colleges. Students utilize career interest inventories to aid in directing their investigation of career choices. These enriched inquiries culminate into eighth grade field trips in which students participate in our "WMS Goes to College" program. This program provides our students with authentic "on campus" experiences. Although COVID did not allow our usual field trips to take place this year, WMS looks forward to "getting back on track" with our eighth grade students continuing to tour the campuses of Spartanburg Methodist College, USC-Upstate, and RD Anderson Vocational Center. In a conventional school year, our seventh grade students are also given the opportunity to tour the campus of Clemson University. WMS continues to explore new paths in career and character development as well as technology. Keyboarding, word processing, and training in multi-media resources enhance our school's daily curriculum. Discovering Computer Science has recently been added to the curriculum to aid in further developing the world class skills needed for career paths.
A multitude of extracurricular opportunities that encourage interpersonal skills are provided at WMS. These are the traits that enable students to work productively as individuals as well as contribute positively to teams. They provide our students with incentives and opportunities to apply real-world communication, team building, and critical thinking and problem solving skills to their daily lives. 353 students were recognized as Cubs on the P.R.O. W. L. for possessing good character traits. Over 150 students participated in FCA or Future Christian Athletes. Although COVID did not allow many of our clubs to meet this school year, WMS is looking forward to reactivating these clubs for the 21-22 school year. Clubs such as Maroon on a Mission, Student Council, Beta Club, Lego, Cubs Create, Cub Club, and the yearbook club have joined forces and worked diligently in the past to interact with the Woodruff community by collecting money, soda tabs, canned goods and other various items for local soup kitchens, Operation Christmas Child, the Ronald McDonald House, and many local nursing home facilities. WMS students take great pride in supporting organizations that aid in the fundamental well-being of others.
Woodruff Middle School also provides opportunities for students both in the arts and on the athletic fields. 23 students participated in Gifted Art. 11 students had works on display at the Chapman Cultural Center, over 30 works were displayed virtually, and 5 students had works on display in the youth art show. 165 students participated in the WMS band. 29 students participated in Gifted Music, 20 students participated in the Woodruff High School Marching Band, and 2 band students made All-State band. 83 students participated in Chorus this school year. Woodruff Middle School’s 8 athletic teams provided 181 middle school students with the opportunity to participate in sports. 31 student athletes were named Athlete of the Week. 9 student athletes were named All Region players. Our Girls' basketball team won the Division 1 Foothills Regular Season Championship and the overall tournament championship.
At WMS, our student accomplishments and achievements are treasured. A hard working and dedicated school faculty as well as the small community of Woodruff work together to encourage and promote the continued emotional and academic progress of every student.
