The 2020-2021 school year presented our students and staff with unprecedented challenges that were met with tremendous resiliency and perseverance. The school year began by learning how to navigate in a safe environment with strict COVID protocols and procedures. The students and staff met these guidelines with professionalism and responsibility. Our school environment was able to stay safe and our students were able to learn in a face-to-face environment all year if they were elected. We are grateful to all of our stakeholders for working together to make this possible. It took patience, collaboration, and a large amount of personal responsibility and the students, staff, and parents rose to the challenge.
Through all of the challenges, our students were able to rise and achieve many successes throughout the school year. Our performing arts students had a tremendous year. Our Dance Team accrued many team and individual awards this year with a big overall 1st place in Competitive Large Group at a culminating event. Our band, orchestra, and theater students were able to successfully participate in wonderful performances in the Spring. The LMS boys basketball team won the LEX 10 Conference championship while our other sports teams also had successful seasons. We also were able to engage in community service projects through our Advocacy groups and began a school-based pantry to serve the needs of our school families that may need the support. These were all student-led and student-driven. Our Team Unified student group was able to lead our school in a spirit week to acknowledge a “Ban the “R” Word” rally and were able to celebrate our Special Education students in other school-based experiences. Students were able to engage in many rigorous and authentic learning experiences even while faced with social distancing guidelines and other barriers. Our Planet Earth Class is unique to Lexington Middle School and the students in that course were able to grow, cultivate, harvest, and prepare many fruits and vegetables throughout the school year. They also learned many lessons on environmental conservation and sustainability while engaging with experts throughout the year via digital conferencing. We are proud of our student’s ability to learn and thrive as students in this environment.
Lexington Middle School began to implement and establish Habits of Success. We believe they will lead to student success in the classroom and in the community while in Middle School and beyond their time at LMS. These Habits are Innovation, Collaboration, Leadership, and Advocacy. These Habits of Success were implemented in their Advocacy groups that met every day as they built community and worked towards creating a better school and better world. We are excited to see how these Habits of Success will expand into our school fabric and how they will grow to impact the Lexington community.
We are so thankful for our students, staff, and parents for meeting the challenges that we had to overcome during this unprecedented school year. Through this challenge, we created strength, patience, and resiliency. We are excited to grow on these new skill sets as we enter the 2021-2022 school year.
