Mevers School of Excellence (MSE) has an unwavering dedication to helping students develop World-Class Skills of the Profile of a South Carolina Graduate that are College and Career ready. Student achievement and our unyielding commitment to providing a choice for communities, parents, and professionals that fosters educational excellence in a global society to be competitive in life, college, and their futures is our mission. Mevers is a culturally diverse school that not only embraces our differences but celebrates them.
Mevers is a school that uses data to drive our instruction and to analyze each student's performance of grade level and subject standards. MSE uses its small class sizes and instructional flexibility to differentiate teaching and offer small-group instruction (for more one-on-one time with the teacher) to ensure mastery of our state standards based rigorous curriculum. All students have a personalized learning plan (PLP), that not only are they a part of creating but their parents are as well. Our teachers are encouraged to be creative, enthusiastic educators that examine the specific needs of each student to develop strategies and learning paths that allow them to flourish. Small group instructional practices in each class allows for teachers to focus on students who are not at mastery while challenging those who have reached mastery to a higher level. MSE teachers conduct student led data chats to ensure students have ownership of their learning.
Most importantly, our teachers build relationships with staff, students, and parents to create a trusting, caring and nurturing environment where everyone feels safe and valued. All teachers have important designated times embedded into their daily schedules that allow for the building of relationships with colleagues and for professional development through Professional Learning Communities (PLC).
At MSE, academics are and will continue to be our main focus for complete student development. However, Mevers understands that for a student to be globally competitive, social skills must be developed as well. MSE helps foster social skills through extracurricular activities such as clubs, trips, events, enrichment activities and building relationships. We offer a variety of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) clubs and courses. As part of our staff, we have a guidance counselor, a mental health counselor, and a behavioral interventionist to be readily available for student needs.
Our school offers advanced classes in Mathematics for our sixth, seventh and eighth-grade students. We have improved our differentiated/small group instructional model with professional development courses and training for our teachers. These had an impact, showing that our teachers were addressing the students’ academic performances below mastery and challenging those at or above mastery.
Our Parent Teacher Cooperative’s (PTC) contributions included classroom supplies, teacher appreciation gifts, and school-wide events. It is because of our active PTC that we can provide the teachers with surprise gifts, supplies, and luncheons.
Mevers, along with all our stakeholders, create a welcoming and safe environment where all students are celebrated, accepted, and given equitable opportunities within the school community.
