Bettis Preparatory Leadership Academy is helping our students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by implementing , embedding and emphasizing our Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and Leadership focused skills throughout our curriculum and instructional processes. Our first and only state report card indicated we scored "Average." We scored 2nd in comparison to the 4 elementary school in our physical district location. It is our intent to score "Good" on our next report card.
At BPLA, we take a practitioner oriented approach to teaching and learning. We demonstrate this through STEM Exhibition Nights, monthly business and STEM partner presentations and model lessons, standards based student projects and STEM based field programs such as STEM and First Tee golfing and quarterly field trips.
Our Leadership focus encompasses studies that concentrate on building individual sensitivity and caring for ourselves and others. We enlist the support of parents and professionals to bring their community missions and talents to our school. Our in-house programs such as character building, School Ambassadors, Student Council, and Girls with Pearls and The Young Men of Bettis clubs are assisting us in developing a culture that embraces diversity and a sense of community.
Much like engineers, scientists, and mathematicians, students at BPLA are encouraged to inquire, design, create, and share their artifacts with each other, parents and guardians, community and eventually the world. Our summer extension of learning encompasses NASA's ASTRO space camp exploration, Reading Camp in 2021 with an art and movement extension based on prioritizing reading. and activities that will continue throughout the upcoming year. We are partnering with local community and faith based organizations to provide after school learning and care. Academic assistance is provided to our students in small groups and individually. Community support both instructionally and financially has been positive.
Our parents and community are consistently encouraged to be integral parts of the whole school wide focus. Our active PTO ( Parents Plus), fundraising committee, School Improvement Council, federal programs committees, and School communications ( Facebook, Website, and monthly newsletter) are designed to keep parents involved.
We are growing academically and building a culture of high expectations within our school. We are striving to "Develop Tomorrow's Leaders Today."
