Mt. Gallant Elementary School is helping all students develop the world class skills and life and career characteristics of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by providing a safe, caring, and academically challenging learning environment. In addition to our continuous work as a professional learning community, we are committed to providing our students a strong, well-rounded education through a comprehensive curriculum. Our experienced educators provide the instruction and motivation for all students to perform at high levels utilizing the highest quality teaching tools, methods, and materials.
Our teachers and staff participated in professional development opportunities including Lucy Calkins Phonics instruction, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (specifically identifying and understanding our own implicit biases, participation and discussion of a privilege walk, and providing equitable learning experiences for all students), and Restorative Discipline.
Even during the pandemic, we realized that our students needed to learn from outside influences. Utilizing Zoom, students were able to meet and have conversations with several authors as well as Rock Hill's Poet Laureate, Angelo Geter. Students were even able to participate in Roving Chef with our district's food service provider to learn how to make a healthy meal.
To close-out the year, our staff and students participated in One School, One Book using the title, The World According to Humphrey by Betty G. Birney. Each student received a copy of the book and our school read it together. Students were involved in special activities and discussions with other off-grade level students via Zoom. Each homeroom completed a project to display outside of their classroom as a culmination of One School, One Book. It was a great experience for all of us.
While the 2020-2021 academic year brought about many unique challenges, our students, staff, and families adjusted to make learning as "normal" as possible. I am very proud of our staff's commitment to our students and families. The Knight Way is the Right Way and it Starts with Us!
