Carver Elementary School is helping all students develop the world class skills and life and career characteristics of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by providing a safe, caring, and academically challenging learning environment. We provide such an environment through the implementation of our school vision: Carver students will utilize problem solving, collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking skills to make a positive and significant impact on their future and the future of our ever changing world. Our mission is to provide our students with engaging, challenging, and authentic real-world learning experiences.
We demonstrate our vision and mission by challenging our students with best practices to reach their full potential and by the continuous professional development of our teachers.
Our teachers at Carver utilize an integrated standard-based curriculum that emphasizes technology and STEM. During the 2016-2017 school year, Carver attained the AdvancED STEM accreditation. During the 2017-2018 school year, our school became a STEM magnet school and has accepted students from across our district. We continue to accept students throughout the district through a Lottery process. Technology resources used to engage students include one to one chrome books in Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade, a portable wireless laptop and iPad lab, software programs, internet resources, SMART STEM Lab activities, SMART Boards, SMART Response Systems, Flash Masters, and Streamline Videos. Carver has a balanced language arts program providing a literacy lab, Reading Renaissance, Orton Gillingham Program, Lexia, and “Write from the Beginning”, a writing program that is used in K-5. In math, a variety of hands-on programs such as Big Ideas, Dreambox, MDC Math, Everyday Counts Calendar Math, and Math 4 Today are used. In Science, we are focused on STEM with the Project Lead the Way Program, Discovery Education, and teacher made Project Based Learning Units. Carver also worked with Creative Learning to create the very first SMART STEM lab in the state, which is used to develop engineering and math skills. We are proud of our strong history of academic success.
At Carver Elementary, we also have various programs outside the academic world to focus on the development of the whole child. Students participate in the SMART STEM lab, science lab, art, music, and physical education weekly. Our parents and community are also significantly involved. Carver has an active PTO and School Improvement Council. Volunteers can be found serving as tutors, mentors, and working with our Positive Behavior System (Bear Bucks), just to name a few areas. Carver has numerous contributors and community, business, and college partners, including our Faith Based Volunteers and Good News Club. Due to COVID restrictions, we were limited as to what after school clubs were offered to students this school year. However, we were able to offer an after school reading/writing club and our BEAR Time Academic Enrichment tutorial sessions. We are also proud to have an Extended Day after school care program which also provides assistance with homework to students. Leadership opportunities offered include Safety Patrols and the Morning Show. Character programs such as Steps to Respect, Core Essentials, and Character Counts are used. Carver also has strong student recognition programs, including Terrific Kids, Princi-pals, Celebrity Student, Honor Roll, Perfect Attendance, Bus of the Month and Reading Renaissance awards. Students are also involved in many service projects throughout the year. These include Harvest Hope Food Drive, Relay for Life, Pasta for Pennies, Jump Rope for Heart, Toys for Tots, and Florence Humane Society. Finally, we continue to offer food packs, with the assistance of an organization called Help 4 Kids, to students who may need something extra to eat over the weekend.
At Carver Elementary, we believe the school, family, and community must share the educational responsibility of our young. Thank you for all of your support in helping make Carver “A Great Place To Learn”.
