Draytonville Elementary School (DES) is helping all students develop the world-class skills, life and career characteristics of the Profile of a South Carolina Graduate by providing a safe, caring and challenging learning environment. We provide such an environment by cooperating with all stakeholders to establish a school vision. We demonstrate this by challenging our students using research-based strategies in the classroom, and providing continuous professional development for our teachers. Our goal is for every student to reach their full potential. All instruction is driven by state curriculum standards, and informed data describing the strengths and needs of our students. This data includes Next Step in Guided Reading, STAR literacy, and STAR math assessments. Based on the 2020-2021 STAR report, 46% of our second grade students are on track for 3rd grade success in English, and 29% in math. On the same assessment, 30% of our first graders are on track for 2nd grade success in English, and 43% in math.
Our commitment to professional development assures instruction is being delivered through a variety of methods to meet the individual needs of the students. By working with colleagues and our reading coach, teachers are continually collaborating to provide exceptional instruction. Response to Intervention (RtI) is a system in which teachers identify a student's particular learning needs. These needs are discussed with parents and the intervention support team to generate instructional strategies to meet the needs of the student.
Today’s graduate must exhibit technological skills and the ability to research to find solutions to problems. We have provided each student with a laptop or iPad to guide them in developing these skills. Each teacher has a laptop and access to web-site subscriptions in order to provide resources for student research. Students are involved in collaboration through classroom assignments. These assignments help develop their ability to problem solve and collaborate with others. Students have the opportunity to serve as school leaders by participating in Beta Club, Library helpers, Recycling Club, Fit2gether committee, Flag Crew, Student Council, and Lego Robotics Team. Participation in these activities fosters the leadership and teamwork skills necessary for the South Carolina Graduate.
DES continually works to promote communication and collaboration with parents to strengthen the home and school bond. Through the assistance of our parenting coordinator and staff, we communicate with parents through newsletters, parent conferences, phone calls, pre-recorded phone messages, and special events. These avenues help maintain the bond between home and school. With the support of parents, staff, and community, DES will continue to develop the world class skills and characteristics needed for students to be successful in the 21st century.
