Broad River Elementary continues to prepare our students to "Learn Locally to Lead Globally" in accordance with the SC Graduate Profile through the following initiatives:
- World Class Knowledge: Rigorous instruction for our students are aligned with the SC State Standards. Students in grades K-5 can participate in our language programs with the target languages of Mandarin or Spanish. Our STEM lab provides students in Pre-K thru 5 the opportunity for additional instruction in science and engineering weekly. Students receive intervention and enrichment opportunities in reading and math. We have certified math and reading tutors. We have implemented Scholastic Literacy school-wide and Ready Math in an effort to provide a guaranteed and viable reading and math curriculum. Google Classroom and Seesaw platforms were utilized to provide virtual learners access to the curricular resources and materials. They were also used as a platform to submit assignments and to communicate with the classroom teacher.
- World Class Skills: Our school has a student ran news show that is broadcasted live daily. The students are using sophisticated software, camera systems, green screen and more. Students in grades K-5 have a scheduled time weekly in our Media Center where they learn to research questions and apply their knowledge through computer generated presentations. In each classroom, cooperative learning is a staple. Students are assigned jobs in their groups and must work together in accordance to the norms set by them and their teachers. Our arts programs tap into student creativity through many awesome projects!
- Life and Career Characteristics: Our school has developed a PBIS System that encompasses these characteristics and makes them a school-wide expectation. Students are recognized for exhibiting these characteristics individually and as a class through student and class dollars which can be cashed in for rewards. Each classroom has a Student of the Month who exemplifies the character trait of the month. From the class Student of the Month, a school-wide Student of the Month is selected. As an extension of PBIS, we have a newly implemented House System. Students (3rd-5th) and staff are assigned to one of five Reefs. Students in K-2 are “Reefs in Training.” The students and staff meet monthly and have quarterly celebrations. The Reef meetings emphasize character, collaboration and work ethic. Students and staff earn points for their Reefs by meeting specific expectations and exhibiting the expected behaviors. Our school also has a unique, one of a kind, Star Leadership Academy. This club’s mission is to implement a leadership program that will teach values, responsibility, self-discipline and commitment to our students. The students in this club work weekly with active duty and retired members of our armed forces from our local bases.
