Our district is helping all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by continuing to focus on our mission of engaging students at all levels in educational experiences that ensure success and life-long learning. Our 12 schools and technologically-advanced career center continue to challenge almost 6,000 students.
In January, 2019, our district received accreditation from AdvancEd. Insights from the review team included sound financial management, attracting and retaining a diverse and talented teaching and support staff, and ongoing attention to resource management to provide all students with experiences that ensure success and life-long learning. Additionally, the review team also commended the district for creating a culture of collaboration to enhance student experiences and opportunities in and outside the classroom. The district received a meets or exceeds expectations rating on 23 of the 31 standards that were evaluated during the three-day visit. Zero standards were rated as needs improvement.
Throughout the 21-22 year, our district provided professional development opportunities for teachers of social studies and science in grades K-12. These sessions were centered around the goal of providing a comprehensive understanding of the newest science and social studies standards. Realizing the impact of this new shift in science teaching and learning, the district enlisted the assistance of the S2TEM Centers SC to lead the charge towards a deep dive into this realm of new expectations for students and teachers. The year also gave several elementary schools a chance to participate in LETRS training provided by the State Department of Education. This initiative is yet another way to move forward in the teaching of reading here in Newberry County.
The departmental accomplishments all play a part in the success of our students, who are our main focus. Our area high schools worked to continue to provide post-graduation opportunities for our secondary students with the help of the Newberry County Career Center. Our elementary and middle school students continue to receive instruction in STEM and STEAM activities, supporting continued program growth at our high schools and career center.
Because we realize we cannot do this alone, we are thankful for the support from partnerships with local law enforcement agencies, Piedmont Technical College, Newberry College, Newberry Opera House, Newberry County Memorial Hospital, and other local businesses. These partnerships extend beyond the classrooms into service learning and character education projects that positively impact our students, schools, and community. Communities, schools, and students continue to come together to embody our district brand of One District, One Team, One Mission.
