J. L. Mann High School is helping all students develop the world class skills of the profile of the South Carolina graduate through model programs such as our Academy of Math, Science, and Technology. The Academy is just one example of how we have maintained a reputation for academic, extracurricular, and athletic excellence for 55 years.
The 2019-20 school year was one of many accomplishments for J. L. Mann High School students. The Graduating Class of 2019 received over $12,700,000 in higher education scholarships, 45 students were recognized as Palmetto Fellows, and 5 students were recognized as National Merit Finalists. The number of AP Scholars increased again this year from 192 in 2019 to 216.
Many innovative programs continued at Mann for the 2019-2020 school year. Participation in the AP Capstone Diploma program increased to 51 students participating. The Power of M, after school transportation, and Mann Power tutoring programs continued to support achievement by reducing the number of students failing courses school-wide and we were able to improve these programs by adding paid tutoring. Additionally, students had the opportunity to participate in academic programs such as Accelerate, NewTech@Mann, Magnet, Fine Arts Center, and the Golden Strip Career Center.
J.L. Mann High School’s PTSA was the largest and most active statewide for the 2019-20 school year. The PTSA awarded more than $20,000 in mini-grants to teachers, reimbursed more than $5000 for classroom supplies, awarded $2500 in Academic Extra-Curricular Support, and donated over 9200 volunteer hours. J. L. Mann PTSA also hosted a parent program on teen drug use and activities focused on opioid addiction during Red Ribbon Week.
Patriot Pride was clearly evident during Spirit Week during which the student body raised $181,000 to support the March of Dimes in Greenville, SC. It was an interesting year for J. L. Mann High School athletics as we did not have a full spring sports season. More than 800 athletes still competed in 21 sports and on 36 teams although the spring sport athlete’s season was shortened. This school year, 10 teams made the playoffs or qualified for state competitions. Girls XC and Boys Swimming both claimed state championships and Girls Tennis won the Upper State championship. Thirty individual athletes achieved all-region, and one athlete was named Regional Player of the Year for the Fall and Winter Seasons. Another athlete earned the SC Gatorade Woman’s Soccer Player of the Year award nomination. We had four All-State players and four players named to their sports North/South or All Star games. Fourteen athletes signed to continue their athletic careers at the next level. Our athletic teams also excelled academically. Sixteen teams achieved an average GPA of 4.0 or higher.
Through a combination of past accomplishments and a commitment to improvement, J. L. Mann High School will continue to meet the challenges of the 21st century with innovation and enthusiasm!
