In the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate, the world class skills outlined set students up for success in a world that stretches well beyond the middle school classrooms of a rural school in Upstate South Carolina. Through intentional planning and dedicated educators, these skills are a part of each student's day at Clinton Middle School, both in experiences that take place in and outside of the classroom.
At Clinton Middle School, each day begins with our schoolwide virtual morning meeting. This opportunity for students and staff to set the tone for the day emphasizes the three pillars of our mission: keeping students safe, creating an environment conducive to teaching and learning, and preparing students for success beyond middle school. These pillars align closely with the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate, which identifies the world-class skills necessary for long-term success. As a Leader in Me school, the seven habits are woven into our morning. These values indirectly connect to the world-class skills outlined by the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. Through our daily practices, instructional programs, and school culture, Clinton Middle School intentionally fosters the development of these essential skills.
Our commitment to developing creativity and innovation, critical thinking and problem solving, collaboration and teamwork, communication, information, media and technology skills, and the ability to learn continuously is evident in the people, professional learning opportunities, and structures that support our students every day. Together, these elements create a learning environment designed to prepare students for future academic, career, and personal success.
The educators at Clinton Middle School play a critical role in helping students develop these competencies. While examples can be found throughout the building, several stand out as models of innovative practice.
In professional learning experiences, many of our English teachers have used artificial intelligence to help grow the skills of students. What started with one of our 8th grade teachers has evolved into multiple teachers using AI to support student writing conferences with very specific prompts. Through thoughtful collaboration and implementation, our teachers have not only modeled world-class skills, but also created experiences that give students the opportunity to demonstrate and understand the value of these skills.
In our Leader in Me elective classes, students have used not only the knowledge gained in their academic core classes, but also the framework of this elective class to add to school culture and efficiency through the use of world-class skills. In addition to making school processes more efficient through their teamwork and planning, these students also took on several projects throughout the year, including planning a schoolwide Veterans Day program, budgeting and creating an outdoor classroom, and redesigning our school's lost and found area.
Through our amazing Career Development Facilitator, Gabby Bates, Clinton Middle School students continue to see the value of world-class skills. Site visits from Be Pro, Be Proud, the Greenwood Genetics Center, and local businesses through a schoolwide career fair have complimented field trips, real-world experiences, and guest speakers as students gain a first hand perspective on how the skills that are used in the classroom create viable and productive citizens in a world beyond the walls of Clinton Middle School.
While the development of world-class skills extends beyond the classroom, we recognize that instruction remains the foundation of this work. To support teachers, Clinton Middle School provides ongoing professional learning through collaborative learning groups led by two assistant principals with respective backgrounds in ELA and Math.. These professional learning communities, along with content level planning opportunities, aim to use data driven reflection to create learning opportunities for students that indirectly emphasize many of the world-class skills identified. Teachers who teach Activity classes had an even more direct opportunity to create these world-class skills for students - focusing their professional learning on implementing project-based learning opportunities into their classes and also planning a student-led community event that highlighted not only the student planning component, but also the academic and extracurricular talents of Clinton Middle School students.
The structures and opportunities available at Clinton Middle School further reinforce these goals. Our daily morning meeting informs students, encourages active participation, and broadens their understanding of the world around them. As we continue our journey as a Leader in Me school, we are committed to empowering students to take ownership of their learning and contribute meaningfully to our school culture.
Technology also plays a significant role in supporting student growth. Through our one-to-one Chromebook initiative, students have access to tools that enhance learning, collaboration, and innovation. Beyond the classroom, students can further develop their skills through a variety of extracurricular opportunities, including our state championship Science Olympiad team, Academic Team, Robotics program, school athletics, and additional athletic opportunities available through our partnership with Clinton High School. These experiences provide students with valuable opportunities to apply their learning in authentic and meaningful ways.
In today's rapidly changing world, the skills identified in the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate are more important than ever. Clinton Middle School remains committed to developing both students and staff through high-quality instruction, meaningful professional learning, and enriching opportunities that prepare students for success beyond our school walls. By investing in our people, programs, and practices, we continue to fulfill our mission of creating a safe and supportive environment that promotes excellence in teaching and learning while preparing students for life beyond middle school.
