Simmons-Pinckney Middle School is a proud community standing on the horizon of limitless opportunities. Located in the heart of historic downtown Charleston, South Carolina, we are deeply connected to and take great pride in the rich heritage and culture that surround us. Named in honor of master ironworker Philip Simmons and the late Reverend Clementa Pinckney, our school reflects their enduring legacy of craftsmanship, leadership, service, and community impact.
As the only neighborhood middle school on the peninsula, Simmons-Pinckney serves as a vital anchor within the Charleston community. With small class sizes and a rich cultural legacy that fosters identity and pride, we are uniquely positioned to become a true educational and cultural hub where history, community, and opportunity intersect.
This year, our team has been intentional in strengthening the foundational systems that ensure a high-quality learning experience for every Panther.
Our school mission is to Embrace, Empower, and Explore, a vision reflected in the 2025- 2026 school year theme: “Every Panther, Every Parent, Every Partner!”
-
Every Panther – Embracing each student and creating a place where they are known, valued, and prepared to thrive.
-
Every Parent – Empowering families and fostering a welcoming community hub built on partnership and trust.
-
Every Partner – Strengthening relationships with community organizations that expand opportunities for students to explore their future.
This vision calls for a learning environment where every student is challenged, inspired, and supported through strong relationships and high-quality instruction.
Preparing Students for Their Future
This year, students participated in a variety of experiences designed to expand their horizons and connect learning to future opportunities.
In the 2025–2026 school year, Simmons-Pinckney Middle School celebrated its 10th year as an AVID school. For a decade, the school has remained committed to creating pathways for scholars and closing the opportunity gap by promoting college and career readiness through the development of organizational, academic, and leadership skills that support the long-term success of traditionally underrepresented students.
Academic opportunities extend beyond the traditional middle school experience. Students have access to high school credit-bearing courses, including English I Honors, Geometry Honors, and Spanish I, providing pathways to rigorous learning opportunities and future achievement. Through intentional collaboration with our feeder high school, students also benefited from strengthened vertical collaboration.
Additionally, Simmons-Pinckney's commitment to future readiness is further enhanced through partnerships with local colleges, universities, and community organizations (Trident Technical College, The Citadel, and College of Charleston).
The school's emphasis on innovation and exploration is evident through enrichment opportunities offered during “Flex on Friday”. These career and technology-focused “club” experiences provide students with opportunities to engage in STEM/CTE activities, creative arts, service learning, and hands-on exploration of personal interests.
The arts also play an important role in the Simmons-Pinckney experience. Partnerships with local organizations provided highly desired access to unique opportunities to develop well-rounded learners.
Simmons-Pinckney is confident that its greatest potential will be realized through sustained leadership, a clear and consistent vision, and the continued development of a committed team of faculty and staff dedicated to student success. With stability, collaboration, and shared purpose, SPMS is poised to maximize its potential and become the thriving neighborhood middle school our community deserves.
