At Armstrong Elementary School, we are committed to helping all students develop world-class skills, as well as the life and career characteristics outlined in the Profile of the Graduate, by providing a safe, nurturing, inclusive, and academically challenging learning environment. Our mission is to build the whole child academically and socially while developing strong relationships with our students and their families. We believe that all students can achieve academic growth and individual success, one child at a time.
Throughout the school year, our students received reading and math intervention during a dedicated WIN block designed to provide targeted academic support. Our faculty and staff also participated in LETRS training with a schoolwide focus on improving student academic discourse. We continued to equip students with social and emotional skills while implementing inclusive practices across the curriculum.
Our professional learning activities focused on the implementation of best practices, including increasing student engagement through teacher clarity, using data to drive instructional decisions, strengthening small-group instruction, incorporating increased depth-of-knowledge questioning to guide student learning, and providing practical, hands-on opportunities for teachers to continue learning and evolving to meet the changing needs of students and the curriculum.
We provided multiple opportunities to support the academic success of our students. We used AMIRA, Reading Horizons, and Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports/Response to Intervention programs to support struggling readers in kindergarten through fifth grade. In addition, we added an afterschool program to provide students with additional learning opportunities in reading and math, as well as Reading Interventionists in first through fifth grade. These interventionists provided additional reading support using the Reading Horizons curriculum.
Our PTA continued to work diligently with school staff to provide opportunities that promoted student achievement and parent engagement through volunteer opportunities, Lunch and Learn workshops, and Regional Team Quarterly Celebrations that recognized students for demonstrating strong character skills.
At Armstrong Elementary School, we remain committed to meeting the needs of each student in order to prepare tomorrow’s leaders and help every child achieve their personal best. Each child is important and deserves the very best we have to offer.
