Johns Island Elementary School is committed to differentiation, student engagement, and the integration of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) across all classrooms. Through student-driven, data-informed instruction, we are helping all students develop the World Class Skills outlined in the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. Our mission is to inspire creativity, curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning while empowering students through transformative STEAM education.
Teachers use data to differentiate instruction, promote critical thinking, and engage students through arts-integrated and STEM-based learning experiences aligned to rigorous standards. Students in grades 2–5 participate in a variety of related arts classes, including drama, music, strings, visual art, library, and physical education. PBIS and Second Step SEL programs foster self-direction, empathy, communication, collaboration, and a global perspective. Our STEAM makerspace, Ripken Jr. Science Center, Promethean boards, and 1:1 student devices further support innovation and technology integration.
Our school is also improving literacy in support of the district’s vision that all students will read on grade level by 5th grade by 2027. Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and Weighted Student Funding initiatives continue to support improved student outcomes and ensure success for all learners.
Students have opportunities to participate in after-school clubs and programs such as drama, soccer, ukulele, chorus, tennis, and whiffle ball. Environmental stewardship is encouraged through recycling initiatives. Health and wellness are also areas of focus.
Throughout the year, our school community participates in academic, social, and family events, including Meet and Greets, a Read-a-thon, STEAM Demonstration Days, Career Day, and a Black History Month Celebration. Our PTA and School Improvement Council work collaboratively to support student achievement, attendance, and school improvement goals.
Johns Island Elementary benefits from strong partnerships with organizations including Kiawah Cares, ArtsNow, Engaging Creative Minds, College of Charleston, Arts, Etc., and Charleston Jazz. Together, these partners help enrich learning and support student success.
At Johns Island Elementary, we are dedicated to meeting the needs of every learner and helping each student reach their fullest potential.
