Pepperhill Elementary School, established in 1975, is one of the remaining neighborhood schools in the Charleston County School District. Its mission is to partner with families and the community to provide high-quality educational experiences that equip every student with the academic and personal skills needed to succeed in school and beyond, while growing into responsible, engaged citizens.
At Pepperhill, instruction is intentionally rigorous and designed to strengthen literacy, critical thinking, collaboration, and student engagement. Educators are deeply committed to supporting the whole child, creating a learning environment that nurtures both academic growth and social-emotional well-being.
Literacy serves as the foundation of the school’s instructional approach. Students engage with meaningful, real-world texts that promote deep comprehension and thoughtful discussion. Classrooms are active, collaborative spaces where students use structured dialogue and learning protocols to participate fully, think critically, and develop a lasting love of reading.
In mathematics, students build a strong foundation in number operations, geometry, algebraic thinking, measurement, and data. Instruction emphasizes visual models, flexible problem-solving strategies, and academic discourse, allowing students to clearly explain and defend their mathematical reasoning while connecting concepts to real-life situations.
Pepperhill’s vision is that all students will meet or exceed grade-level expectations in reading and math by the end of third grade and continue to succeed in upper elementary grades.
Beyond academics, the school is committed to fostering a safe, positive, and inclusive culture. The Ron Clark Academy House System promotes community, character, and school pride. Social-emotional learning is supported through the Second Step curriculum, while a points-based behavior system encourages positive choices and allows students to earn rewards and participate in House celebrations.
At Pepperhill Elementary, every staff member is dedicated to supporting students’ academic, social, and emotional development. The school’s goal is to empower learners to become confident, compassionate, and future-ready individuals prepared to lead, serve, and succeed in college, careers, and life.
