Byrd Elementary School is committed to preparing students with the World-Class Knowledge, World-Class Skills, and Life and Career Characteristics outlined in the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. Through rigorous academic instruction, leadership development, technology integration, and meaningful community partnerships, Byrd provides students with opportunities to become successful learners and responsible citizens.
Our instructional program emphasizes high-quality, evidence-based teaching practices designed to meet the diverse needs of all learners. Teachers engage in ongoing professional learning and instructional coaching to strengthen classroom practices, including the implementation of effective literacy strategies, text-dependent questioning, and differentiated instruction. Through a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), students receive targeted interventions and enrichment opportunities in both reading and mathematics based on individual learning needs.
Students in Kindergarten through second grade receive foundational literacy instruction aligned to the Science of Reading through programs such as the Once Early Reading Program, Heggerty Phonemic Awareness, UFLI Foundations, Lexia, and i-Ready. Literacy support continues in grades three through five through Lexia and i-Ready, which provide personalized instruction based on student performance data. In mathematics, all students utilize i-Ready and Reflex Math to strengthen conceptual understanding and fluency. Daily Number Corner routines reinforce essential mathematical concepts, while Bridges Math Intervention provides additional support for students requiring targeted instruction.
Technology plays an integral role in student learning. Through our one-to-one device initiative, students engage in personalized digital learning experiences that support academic growth and allow teachers to provide differentiated small-group instruction.
As a Leader in Me Lighthouse School, Byrd Elementary promotes leadership, responsibility, and student ownership of learning. Students develop communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills through leadership opportunities, student-led conferences, service-learning projects, and participation in clubs aligned with their interests, including athletics, visual and performing arts, and STEM-related activities such as coding.
Character education and civic responsibility are embedded throughout the school culture. Students participate in service-learning projects that support community organizations, including Golden Harvest Food Bank, the Aiken County Animal Shelter, and the Charlie Norwood Veterans Affairs Medical Center. These experiences help students develop empathy, leadership, and a commitment to serving others.
Students also benefit from a variety of cultural and enrichment opportunities through partnerships with local organizations. Experiences such as performances by the Augusta Symphony Orchestra and Joye in Aiken, visual arts competitions, and educational field experiences at the Augusta Canal, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, and local farms extend learning beyond the classroom and foster creativity, critical thinking, and real-world connections.
At Byrd Elementary School, we are dedicated to providing a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment where all students are challenged to achieve academic success, develop leadership skills, and reach their full potential.
