At Petersburg Primary School, we are committed to helping all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. We do this by living out our mission every day—providing a safe, caring, and academically challenging environment where all students can succeed. Our motto, “Together We Can,” continues to guide and inspire our work.
We are proud of our highly qualified and dedicated staff, which includes 28 certified educators—among them one National Board-Certified Teacher, seven Reading Recovery-trained teachers, and sixteen teachers endorsed in Read to Succeed Literacy. These passionate professionals serve our students from Pre-K through second grade, laying a strong foundation for lifelong learning.
This year, our partnership with Winthrop University’s NetSERVE Teacher Residency Grant welcomed two teachers who completed this rigorous program. Our staff engaged in extensive professional development, including goal setting and data analysis, to identify and apply best instructional practices. Teachers continued their learning through LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling), Reading Recovery training through Clemson University, and math and science professional development offered by the South Carolina Department of Education and iReady professional development with Curriculum Associates. Our 4K teachers also participated in LETRS training this year.
Our youngest learners in the CERDEP program once again participated in the Age of Learning Program—an at-home, technology-based initiative supporting kindergarten readiness. To address individual learning needs, qualifying students participated in Response to Intervention (RTI), Reading Recovery, and Kindergarten Connections. We also implemented the RISE (Reading Inspires Students to Excel) reading intervention program for selected first- and second-grade students.
All students in grades K–2 utilized Curriculum Associates' iReady Reading and Math, supporting personalized instruction. Thanks to our 1:1 Chromebook initiative, every student had access to digital learning tools in their classroom.
Beyond academics, we place great emphasis on character development and life skills. Through programs like Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program (OBPP), our students learn and practice traits such as Kindness, Responsibility, Respect, Perseverance, and Integrity. At Petersburg, we celebrate both achievement and growth, believing that recognizing progress encourages self-motivation, resilience, and a strong work ethic.
We are grateful for the continued support of our community partners. With the help of local businesses' donations of school supplies and other essentials, we were able to support our families throughout the year.
At Petersburg Primary School, we believe that every day is an opportunity to shape the future of our children. With ongoing support from families and our community, we remain steadfast in our mission. Together, we are lighting the way for each child’s journey toward becoming a capable, confident, and compassionate citizen.
