At Springfield Middle School, we are proud to help all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by maintaining high academic expectations, supporting the whole child, and building a school culture rooted in purpose, equity, and growth. This year, our staff rallied behind a renewed vision: Mustangs Charge Forward. Our mindset recognizes the strength, resilience, and momentum of our school community, as we collectively push forward to improve the learning of ALL of our students.
Our instructional focus is centered on effective classroom practice, strengthening small group instruction, deepening our use of common formative assessments, and growing our Professional Learning Communities (PLCs). Our intentional coaching instructional rounds cultivate in teachers being empowered to use data to drive next steps and adjust instruction in real time. We prioritized the power of feedback not just as a tool for grading, but as a strategy to advance learning. With the result of students reflecting on their progress and becoming more responsible, resourceful, and resilient thinkers.
Our staff's collective efforts in the 24-25 school year resulted in Springfield Middle School receiving the National Forum Schools To Watch designation. This is Springfield Middle School's third time receiving this designation.
In addition, Springfield Middle School is also designated as a Solution Tree: Model PLC school for its effective utilization of the PLC process.
The 4 Cs, critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity - serve as a foundation across academics, the arts, athletics, and enrichment. Whether it’s through our award-winning Band Program (which earned the SCBDA Outstanding Performance Award), our athletic teams, or our wide variety of Clubs and Flex Time (H3) options, students are challenged to grow both intellectually and socially. Leadership and service opportunities through Beta Club, Student Council, and school-wide events create authentic ways for students to give back and lead forward.
In addition to Charging Forward in academics, SMS is also taking bold steps to continue building on our Ci3T framework Tier 1 practices to support students' social, emotional, and behavioral needs. Our staff will continue character lessons and a positive ticket system to recognize and reinforce positive choices. For students in need of further support, we have behavior academies with targeted support. We know that students thrive when they are seen, supported, and challenged. In addition, monthly, 24 students who demonstrate the Mustang Charge will be selected as our Mustangs of the Month.
We also know that partnerships with families and the community are essential to student success. This year, our School Improvement Council used feedback from parent surveys to guide improvement efforts. Springfield’s new social media presence and weekly digital communication tools allowed families to stay informed and engaged in real time.
At Springfield Middle, we are focused on opportunity, outcomes, and advancement for all students. As a staff, we are united by our belief that every student can grow and that with the right supports, relationships, and mindset, every student will.
Our mission remains: “To cultivate meaningful relationships, embrace diversity, and pursue academic excellence and equity for all students.”
As a school, our collective goal is to create a school community where students feel safe, staff feel supported, and families feel connected. Springfield is not just a place where students learn; Springfield Middle School is a place where they begin developing into who they’re meant to become.
