Hughes Academy of Science and Technology is committed to helping all students develop the world-class skills and life and career characteristics outlined in the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. We do this by providing a safe, caring, and academically challenging environment where every student can thrive.
This commitment is guided by our school’s collective vision: Hughes Academy is a diverse and collaborative community developing growth-minded learners. We bring this vision to life by challenging students with best instructional practices and by investing in the continuous professional development of our teachers.
Our educators embrace student-centered strategies such as STEAM, Project-Based Learning, and the design thinking model, which encourages students to ask, imagine, plan, create, and improve. These approaches help students think critically and creatively. We also partner with local businesses whose professionals help guide students through real-world applications—building essential teamwork and 21st-century skills.
At Hughes, we focus on developing the whole child. Through our partnership with Mentor Upstate, we offer a mentoring program that supports our at-risk population. We’ve also launched a peer tutoring program, single-gender leadership clubs, and a formalized intervention protocol to ensure that every student receives the support they need. Leadership development is a priority, and we believe these opportunities prepare students not only for school, but for life.
We promote a positive culture through our school-wide behavior framework called ROCK along with Live school, which emphasizes Respect, Order, Communication, and Kindness. We also meet basic needs through our HAK PAK program, which provides weekend meals to food-insecure students and families.
Beyond the classroom, our students engage in a wide range of activities including Robotics, Lego Club, Spanish Club, Math Counts, Beta Club, Theater Club, and numerous athletic programs which create space for every child to explore their interests and talents.
We believe that school, family, and community must work together as one team to deliver a high-quality education. We’re proud to be recognized as a National PTSA School of Excellence. Our School Improvement Council and PTSA are vital partners in decisions about student activities, community needs, and program development.
Thank you for your ongoing support of public education and of Hughes Academy of Science and Technology. We’re proud of what we’ve built together and excited for what’s to come.
Let’s continue working as one team to ensure every student has the opportunity to grow, lead, and succeed.
