Waccamaw Middle School (WMS) aims to help all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by continuing to strive for excellence through addressing the whole child - socially, emotionally, and academically. We are committed to maintaining and achieving high academic standards, creating a school culture that supports and challenges all students, and providing the foundational skills for student success. We are a unified tribe of Warriors discovering how to learn, take ownership, and develop pride in our school and community while becoming productive, successful citizens.
Waccamaw Middle School continues to provide school-wide direct instruction that incorporates assistance and support for all students in an effort to close the achievement gap. Intervention, remediation, Study Buddies, and small group instruction are available for students as a means of immediate and targeted support. The school’s counseling department and the MTSS/Triage Team also provide support for students’ social and emotional learning. Various informal and formal check-ins are provided throughout the school year based on the needs determined by the Triage team and other staff like the School Counselor, School Psychologist, and RBHS (Rehabilitative Behavioral Health Services) Counselor.
Reflecting upon the past school year, our academic efforts have proven to be overall successful as our students have shown strengths and growth throughout the year. WMS was recognized with another Excellent rating on the SC Report Card for the 2023-2024 school year, moving up 25 points total over the last two years. We had 16 students selected as the SC Junior Scholars for their performance on the PSAT. We had 28 students receive a perfect score on the Algebra 1 EOC assessment, and 25 students received a perfect score in either math and/or ELA on the SC Ready state assessment.
Our fine arts and athletics departments continued to excel this year, as well. Over half the students at Waccamaw Middle School participated in one of our successful programs. We had 38 student Warriors selected for Georgetown All-County Chorus and an additional 25 student Warriors selected for Georgetown All-County Band. We had three student Warriors selected to perform for the Region Five Honors Band. In athletics, our girls basketball team had a successful season going undefeated in the regular season and brought home the second place trophy in the Black Mingo Middle School Conference tournament. Many of our students also participated at the varsity level at Waccamaw High School. Our very own Mr. Milliken was named the South Carolina Boys Track and Field Coach of the Year after winning the 3A boys Track and Field Championship for the Waccamaw Community.
The mission of Waccamaw Middle School is to ensure that each Warrior is provided with strong standards-based academic foundations, diverse extra-curricular experiences, and opportunities to develop ownership and pride to create well-rounded lifelong learners in a safe and supported community. We are committed and focused on student learning. We continually strive to be academically excellent, socially present, and developmentally responsive so that all of our students have the opportunity to learn and grow in an environment that is designed for adolescent learners. We continue to analyze our assessment and perception data for the purpose of improving our practices and to ensure that we continue on our trajectory of excellence.
At Waccamaw Middle School, “We Just Can’t Hide that Warrior Pride!”
