Discover the Hidden Treasure of Downtown Charleston – SPMS
Nestled in the heart of historic downtown Charleston, Simmons-Pinckney Middle School (SPMS) is a hidden treasure, the only middle school on the Charleston peninsula and a proud member of the District 20 (D20) school community. Named in honor of two remarkable South Carolinians, Phillip Simmons, the celebrated master blacksmith, and Reverend Clementa C. Pinckney, the beloved pastor and state senator, our school stands as a living tribute to creativity, leadership, and service.
We proudly serve as a receiving school for Mitchell Elementary and Sanders-Clyde Elementary, and a feeder school to Burke High School, forming a vital K–12 pipeline aligned with the Charleston County School District’s mission: “transforming lives through education and ensuring equity and excellence for every student.”
At SPMS, we believe our scholars are “leaders, winners, and destined for greatness” as they ROAR into becoming globally productive citizens. We also believe that “it takes a village to raise a child.” Every scholar is paired with a dedicated adult mentor who ensures they feel seen, supported, and valued.
Our work is grounded in our school’s mission:
“To empower and engage every scholar through high-quality instruction, leadership development, and real-world experiences in a supportive and inclusive environment.”
Our vision is:
“To produce confident, compassionate, and college- and career-ready scholars who will leave a legacy of excellence within their community and beyond.”
This mission aligns directly with Superintendent Anita Huggins’ priorities for Charleston County School District, centering equity, access, academic rigor, and student voice. At Simmons-Pinckney, we live this mission daily. This is what it means to transform schools into launchpads for opportunity, growth, and lifelong success.
Academic excellence is the foundation of our work. Our school is anchored in the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate and powered by our schoolwide implementation of AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination). AVID equips scholars with the tools to think critically, collaborate effectively, and take ownership of their learning. We are proud to be recognized as an “AVID Site of Distinction,” reflecting our commitment to preparing students for rigorous academic challenges and success beyond the classroom.
We place a strong emphasis on literacy and mathematics, understanding their role as cornerstones of student growth. Every ELA classroom delivers high-quality, standards-aligned instruction, supported by targeted intervention blocks. Our math program builds deep understanding and prepares scholars for accelerated learning. Students can earn high school credits in Algebra I, Geometry, Spanish I, and Fundamentals of Computing, opportunities made even stronger through our expanding partnership with Burke High School.
We also prioritize social-emotional learning, with daily experiences that focus on developing soft skills, promoting positive behavior, and fostering relationship-building. We know that when students feel safe, connected, and empowered, they are ready to reach their full potential.
Simmons-Pinckney is a middle school driven by purpose, equity, and excellence. We are committed to teacher development, high-impact instructional strategies, and meaningful community engagement. Our scholars benefit from enrichment experiences made possible through partnerships with Doors to Dream, Charleston Promise Neighborhood, the Charleston Recreation Department, and the TeacherLove Project, organizations that help us nurture both academic and personal success.
At Simmons-Pinckney Middle School, our most significant focus is cultivating a legacy of “excellence, resilience, and purpose.” We are deeply committed to creating an environment where every scholar is empowered to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Through high-quality instruction, meaningful mentorship, and strong community partnerships, we prepare our students to lead with confidence and compassion.
We invite you to explore what makes our school a cornerstone of educational innovation and student success in Charleston. Together with our families and community, we are proud to shape the next generation, one scholar at a time.
