At Thomas C. Cario Middle School, we are committed to developing the world-class skills and character traits outlined in the Profile of a South Carolina Graduate. Our mission is grounded in three core goals: creating a positive and enriching middle school experience, investing in our exceptional faculty and staff, and building strong, collaborative relationships with our community.
Cario challenges students to think critically, act creatively, and lead with character. We offer a rigorous academic program that includes high school credit courses in Algebra I, Geometry, English I, Spanish, and Computer Science. In addition to core academics, our diverse curriculum includes opportunities in the pre-engineering Project Lead the Way program, business, financial literacy, marine science, health sciences, video production, and the performing and visual arts.
Our students consistently excel in local, state, and national academic competitions, including the CCSD Spellbound Spelling Bee, Quest, LEGO Robotics, the SC State Scholastic Chess Championship, the National Geographic Geography Bee, and Mock Trial. We take particular pride in our nationally recognized Fine Arts programs, which continue to earn acclaim at every level.
Through nationally normed benchmark assessments, we see year-over-year improvement in our students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Our dedicated staff implements the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) to ensure that all students feel safe, supported, and equipped to grow socially, emotionally, and academically.
Literacy remains a cornerstone of our academic focus. In alignment with the district’s goal for all students to read on grade level by 2027, we have enhanced our literacy practices across all content areas. This includes targeted acceleration classes, data-driven progress monitoring, and professional development centered on effective cross-curricular reading strategies.
Cario is also a place where leadership, kindness, self-advocacy, and service to others are intentionally cultivated. Through organizations such as the National Junior Honor Society and Student Council, our students lead with purpose and compassion. Their creativity and community-minded spirit drive philanthropic initiatives that make a meaningful impact. Our rich variety of clubs—including those focused on academics, arts, STEM, leadership, horticulture, literacy, and even Star Wars—ensures every student can find their passion.
Our students also thrive outside the classroom, excelling in athletics through local recreation leagues and private organizations. None of this would be possible without the unwavering support of our families and community partners, whose engagement is essential to our shared success.
As we look to the future, we remain reflective and driven by continuous improvement. Our goal is to become South Carolina’s top-rated neighborhood middle school. We will continue to focus on what matters most—nurturing students, empowering staff, and partnering with our community—to prepare students to graduate as capable, compassionate, and competitive global citizens.
