Whale Branch Middle School proudly serves 229 students in grades 6-8 from Grays Hill, Seabrook, Dale, Lobeco, Sheldon and surrounding communities of Northern Beaufort County.
WBMS has 32 certified staff, 19 support and professional staff and several community partnerships providing robust wrap around supports for our students and their families. Some of our current partnerships include a full-time SRO through the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, onsite medical and dental care through Beaufort-Jasper Comprehensive Health, mental health and behavioral health support through Coastal Empire Mental Health and Wright Directions, after school and summer programming through Boys and Girls Club, healthy foods and gardening experiences through Heritage Community Farm, student support services through Communities in Schools, community afterschool and summer programs through Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, and many other valuable community partnerships.
At WBMS we offer integrated STEAM instruction and experiences. We have a 3-D computer simulation lab allowing for immersive exploration and manipulation through digital augmentation. Our media center houses a STEAM project lab with a wide range of project experiences including 3-D printing, CNC milling, laser engraving and multimedia broadcasting. We also have full community garden on our grounds where students work with faculty and community volunteers to cultivate crops and learn about gardening and scientific principles that support it.
We offer a wide range of advanced and high school credit courses, with the opportunity for dedicated students to earn up to 6 high school credits and junior standing during their middle school career. This year we had 34 students participate in at least one high school credit course.
We have expanded our fine arts offerings to include visual arts, theater, chorus and band. We also offer Spanish to support foreign language development.
Our students demonstrate leadership and character through student government, RCA house activities, as docents and tour guides for history programs and on the athletic field.
WBMS sets expectations around the values GRIT for Growth, Respect, Initiative and Teamwork. Students also follow a school creed that casts a vision for a successful future, defines the actions and attitudes that support success and gives accountability to support growth toward these goals.
