Aiken Intermediate School is committed to developing the world-class skills outlined in the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. Through the intentional cultivation of strong, positive relationships, we support students in building confidence, expanding their academic knowledge, and achieving independence. Our school fosters a community of learners equipped with the academic skills, habits of mind, and leadership abilities necessary for success in an increasingly complex global society.
Aiken Intermediate School (AIS) offers a comprehensive, single-grade experience designed specifically for sixth-grade students. The academic and arts programs are thoughtfully structured to address the developmental needs of 11- and 12-year-old learners. Faculty and staff are dedicated to supporting students as they transition from elementary to middle school through instruction delivered within small learning communities, or “learning camps,” allowing for personalized attention and support. Central to this model is a strong emphasis on Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), which provides a framework for students to develop essential competencies, including emotional regulation, goal setting, empathy, relationship building, and responsible decision-making. This emphasis contributes to a positive, supportive school climate and promotes long-term student success. AIS is proud to be recognized as a Capturing Kids’ Hearts school.
Students at AIS engage in rigorous academic coursework through both grade-level and advanced offerings in English Language Arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. They have demonstrated academic excellence through their participation and success in district and regional competitions, including Battle of the Books, Academic Team events, and the district spelling bee. Miller Fox was recognized as the school’s spelling bee champion, and the Battle of the Books team earned first place in the district competition. Additionally, students benefit from a comprehensive arts program that includes opportunities for study and performance in dance, visual arts, orchestra, music, and band.
Aiken Intermediate School remains steadfast in its commitment to educational excellence and is supported by a highly dedicated and professional faculty and staff. We proudly recognize Dedra Sanborn as Teacher of the Year, Bashonna Wright as First-Year Teacher of the Year, and Donna Dandy as the Giving Even More recipient. In addition, AIS was recognized through the Safety Incentive Program, with selection based on the school’s strong commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment, including thorough safety committee reporting, completion of safety audits, and consistently low incident rates.
