Westwood High School Narrative
Westwood High School remains steadfast in its commitment to developing the world-class skills outlined in the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate through the implementation of our whole-school magnet program—the Institute of Research, Engagement, and Design (iRED)—as well as AVID and a variety of rigorous, real-world learning opportunities that empower students to lead, design, and excel.
Our theme for the 2024–2025 school year, "Excellence on Purpose," embodies the core tenets of our Habits of Success: Resilience, Integrity, Scholarship, and Engagement. These principles guide instruction, shape culture, and inspire students to RISE—in the classroom, in the community, and beyond.
As a one-to-one technology-integrated school, our students utilize Chromebook devices to engage in collaborative learning, global communication, and authentic problem-solving. They interact with authors, doctors, scientists, and business leaders, bringing relevance to their academic experience. Westwood students also produce award-winning media, including The Morning News Show, our live weekly broadcast.
We emphasize 21st-century skills—such as critical thinking, communication, creativity, and innovation—while offering meaningful service-learning and civic engagement opportunities. Students participate in initiatives like the Battle of the Axe, Columbia Assistance Bridge, Sister Care, Harvest Hope Food Bank, and Richland Two’s Backpack Initiative. They also serve as advocates for mental health, teen dating awareness, and social change.

Our students have excelled academically, artistically, and in service. They’ve earned certifications above national averages, testified before federal commissions, responded with leadership during emergencies, and secured placements in elite programs and institutions.
With a continued focus on student-centered instruction, authentic community partnerships, and learner outcomes, Westwood will continue to learn, lead, and design pathways that prepare all students for life beyond the Castle.
