Dear Berry Shoals Families,
On behalf of our dedicated faculty and staff, it is my sincere pleasure to thank you for your support in making our inaugural year as an elementary school a success. It is not every day that a school launches with all new students and families, and together, we created a kind, caring, collaborative, and engaging school culture from the ground up.
Our mission at Berry Shoals Elementary is to prepare students to thrive in a global society by providing exceptional educational experiences in a safe, caring, and inclusive environment. Guided by our vision to inspire students to discover their potential, pursue their passions, and shape their future, we laid the groundwork for a school community rooted in connection, creativity, and engaging academics.
This year’s school theme, "Fly and Mighty," along with our motto, “Swarming to Bee Great!”, reflected the spirit of togetherness and ambition that defined our school. As we welcomed our very first group of elementary students, we didn’t just open classroom doors, we opened the doors to endless possibilities for discovery, friendship, and growth.
At Berry Shoals, in addition to having high expectations for student growth and academic achievement, our core values centered on nurturing a love of learning, promoting mutual respect, and building a community where every child felt seen, supported, and empowered. Our classroom culture was founded on trust and acceptance, encouraging students to take academic risks, learn from their mistakes, and strive to reach their full potential. In this environment, students became comfortable providing feedback, supporting their peers, and engaging meaningfully in their learning journey.
Berry Shoals students began the school year by spending valuable time in their classrooms getting to know their classmates and making friends. They also learned how to achieve success in the classroom and throughout the school. We were intentional about allowing time for students to learn and share with one another, helping them thrive academically and socially. We introduced our students to our mascot, Buzzy the Bee, who helped teach them the positive behaviors and expectations needed to be safe and successful in our school, also known as The Hive. Additionally, students were recognized weekly in the Hive for outstanding citizenship and behavior.
We also spent intentional time with our staff before the school year began, giving them a chance to get to know one another and their new grade-level teams. With nearly 60% of our staff teaching in a new grade or subject and 40% new to our school, this time was critical. We even took our staff on a bus tour of our neighborhoods to help strengthen the connection between home and school.
One of our key goals in establishing our school’s culture was to create meaningful opportunities for families to be involved in a safe and welcoming environment. Our journey began at the Popsicles with Principals event in July, where we first met many of our students and families. From there, we hosted Meet the Teacher Day, parent-teacher conferences, our joyful Fall Festival, holiday sing-alongs, Cookies with Santa, and the Penguin Patch Holiday Shop. The turnout for these events was fantastic, thanks to the support of our incredible PTO, volunteers, and community sponsors. We also loved hosting families for Pastries with Parents, Grandparents for Breakfast, and our Terrific Kids celebrations each quarter.
In the spring, we celebrated our grade-level Spelling Bee winners and enjoyed a student-led Living Wax Museum. Our families packed the house at our exciting Family STEM and Literacy Night and Family Skate Night at the Roebuck Skate Center. We hosted the Triple P Positive Parenting Seminar in collaboration with the Middle Tyger Community Center, welcomed families to Buzzy’s Bigtime Bash, and held our inaugural Field Day, which was a huge success! Our 1st and 3rd graders, along with our chorus, wowed us with a fantastic Spring Sing-along and concert. To close out the year, we held our Kick-Off to Kindergarten event for next year’s 5K students and celebrated with End-of-Year Awards Days with our students and families.
At Berry Shoals, keeping our students safe has been our number one priority from the very beginning. Like all schools in District Five, we take a thoughtful and thorough approach to school safety. We have trained safety staff and a school resource officer who works closely with local law enforcement to help protect our school community. Throughout the year, we followed strict safety protocols and regularly practiced emergency drills to ensure everyone knew what to do in any situation. Our building is also equipped with advanced security systems and undergoes routine safety audits. We want parents to know that we are always working hard to provide the safest possible environment for every child, every day. As we reflect on all that we accomplished this year, we are filled with gratitude and excitement. We are proud of the strong foundation we built and look forward to continuing the journey together. Our entire Berry Shoals community, teachers, staff, students, and families, truly came together to Swarm to Bee Great!
