At Pelion Elementary School, the 2024–2025 academic year was marked by a renewed sense of purpose and unity under the inspiring theme “Win the Day.” This theme guided our work as we redefined and recommitted to our school mission through the lens of P.R.I.D.E. — Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Determination, and Effort. These core values were intentionally reinforced each morning through the “Words of Wisdom” video messages from the principal, providing students and staff with daily motivation and meaningful life lessons.
A central focus this year was the implementation of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. A cross-disciplinary PBIS Leadership Team was formed, and all staff members engaged in comprehensive professional development to ensure a successful rollout. Students were celebrated quarterly during schoolwide PBIS celebrations, and a PBIS Rewards Store encouraged consistent positive behavior. This initiative not only enhanced our school climate but also supported the development of strong character in our students.
Student leadership opportunities flourished through programs such as the Morning News Show, Safety Patrol, and Special Olympics Unified Partners. Our world-champion Archery team continued to bring pride to the school with outstanding performances throughout the season. In addition, students explored their interests through chorus, the Running Club, and the 21st Century After School Program, which provided both academic support and enrichment in a safe and engaging environment.
Academically, the school embarked on a transformational journey with the first year of implementation of LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling). All K–3 teachers, selected fourth- and fifth-grade teachers, instructional coaches, interventionists, and administrators began this in-depth training aligned with the Science of Reading. This professional learning directly supported the rollout of the new South Carolina College- and Career-Ready ELA Standards and the adoption of HMH Into Reading. Teachers were given extended planning time with the literacy coach to unpack standards and thoughtfully plan instruction.
Support in mathematics and science was bolstered by the district math coach and science coordinator, who provided targeted instructional support throughout the year. Our staff also engaged in high-impact professional learning by attending notable conferences, including the PLC at Work Summit, Visible Learning with John Hattie, Capturing Kids’ Hearts Flagship Training, and Orton-Gillingham Reading Training.
Technology played a vital role in personalizing learning for every student. Each K–5 student had access to a digital device, enabling them to engage daily with i-Ready Personalized Pathways in reading and math. These pathways were customized based on results from the fall, winter, and spring i-Ready diagnostics, helping teachers use data to inform and drive small-group instruction. As a result, students demonstrated remarkable academic growth and a strong sense of ownership over their learning.
In support of continuous school improvement, PES prioritized the revitalization of our School Improvement Council by drafting new bylaws and providing formal training for all members. The SIC collaborated closely with our Parent-Teacher Organization to support school-wide initiatives aimed at improving both academic achievement and school culture. SIC members also attended the Annual SIC Conference to strengthen their capacity for impactful leadership.
Community engagement remains a cornerstone of the PES experience. This year’s events — Veterans Day Program, Pastries with Parents, Grandparents’ Valentine’s Luncheon, Candyland Academic Night, and the Pelion Showcase (featuring all four schools in our attendance cluster) — provided rich opportunities for connection and celebration. These gatherings brought families, students, and staff together to build the strong community spirit that defines PES.
Finally, teachers made intentional efforts to integrate the Lexington One Graduate Profile into their daily instruction, helping students develop the World-Class Skills outlined in the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. As students grew in their understanding of collaboration, communication, and problem-solving, their enthusiasm for sharing their learning became evident during classroom visits by administrators and instructional coaches.
PES continues to thrive as a learning community where academic success, character development, and positive relationships come together to support our mission. With P.R.I.D.E. as our foundation and a commitment to “Win the Day,” we look forward to building on this momentum in the year ahead.
