Gateway Elementary School is helping all students develop the world-class skills and life and career characteristics of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by providing a safe, caring, and academically challenging learning environment. We provide such an environment through the implementation of our school vision: "Success Begins Here!" We remain true to our vision by directly aligning the professional development of our teachers to exemplary research-based practices. The result is a full menu of academic programs and practices that challenge each student and create a solid foundation for continued success.
Our staff is committed to assuring that we stay abreast of current and effective delivery models to ensure the continued academic success of our students. As a result, all staff members are immersed in extensive professional development sessions throughout the school year and well into the summer months. This professional development includes intensive study into The Science of Reading framework, and collaborating in grade-level teams to examine student progress data every two weeks. A pivotal component of our data analysis process includes designing instruction for each student as a result of their most recent progress monitoring data. This fluid model of instruction takes place in small group settings each week, for learners at, below, and well above grade level. We believe that by following this monthly data review protocol, our students are constantly challenged to reach their highest academic goals, and gaps are quickly identified and addressed. Gateway Elementary believes that reading competency across the curriculum is crucial to the success of our students. Our data-based delivery models allow us to instruct our students at their specific academic level, which results in each student reaching and exceeding their academic goals for the school year.
Gateway Elementary School uses a "learning lab" approach to provide professional development for our staff, which positively impacts our students. Our teaching staff includes a number of in-house "experts" whose classrooms are used to showcase current innovative delivery models for our staff. Most recently, our staff served as peer models in the areas of standards alignment, creating success criteria for student self-assessment, and the Science of Reading delivery models. Our Gateway staff believes that the level of student engagement for all students is optimal when a greater variety of non-tech teaching tools and delivery methods are integrated into the curriculum. As a result, we immerse ourselves in professional development sessions that artfully intertwine hands-on delivery techniques, paired with selective, powerful instructional technology. We remain committed to this practice, with intentional implementation of John Hattie's high-yield influences as we enter the 2025-2026 school year.
As mentioned above, in keeping with our commitment to provide a rigorous academic environment to our young learners, we have integrated a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics) curriculum into classrooms at every grade level. Students attend two weekly STEAM Labs on a rotating basis and are immersed in collaborating, experimenting, and problem-solving with peers. This delivery method encourages students to think deeply and to make cross-curricular connections through hands-on exploration, inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking. The result is students who fully embrace experiential learning, persevere in problem solving, embrace true collaboration, and work through the creative process.
Our instructional coach and literacy specialist provide student-centered coaching sessions in the classroom throughout the school year. These sessions focus on goals for student learning and ensure that every student is challenged in the classroom in order to meet their maximum potential. Our Response to Intervention (RTI) services are prescriptive and targeted to the unique needs of the learner. This vast menu of services is offered at each grade level and utilizes state-of-the-art delivery methods such as Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI), Reading Horizons, Serravallo 2.0, Comprehension Toolkit, and highly effective co-teaching practices to assure the success of students who need additional math and reading instruction.
Our teachers and staff collaborate to develop common formative assessments that measure the strengths and weaknesses of each student. During our regular “data team” meetings, crucial conversations and in-depth discussions occur that inform daily classroom instruction. This practice is followed by our weekly “On Track” meetings in which our team examines any potential issue that may prevent a student's ultimate graduation from high school. Strategies are developed and monitored on an individual basis to address concerns with academic progress, attendance, and behavior obstacles.
At Gateway Elementary School, our students excel academically; however, we believe the success of our students should be measured by more than academic achievement alone. Our students are fully immersed in learning soft skills through a Ron Clark House System model. Every adult and student at Gateway Elementary School are members of a specific "house". These houses include the Orange House of Leadership, The Purple House of Perseverance, The Green House of Peace and the Yellow House of Integrity. Our staff believes that the hearts and minds of our students are equally important. To ensure that our students are well-balanced and thrive academically, socially, and emotionally, all students receive weekly lessons that focus primarily on maintaining social and emotional health. Additionally, our students actively participate in outreach projects within and beyond our community. Examples include our in-house Junior Beta Club Fundraisers, Jump Rope for Heart, Reading All Stars, Box Tops for Education, and the St. Jude Math-a-Thon. Gateway's students regularly partner with the Rotary Club of Travelers Rest to provide necessary resources for needy members of our community.
Our commitment to excellence reaches far beyond the academic goals for our students. We believe that our environment should include a variety of celebrations and unique opportunities for all students. Gateway was awarded the “National Beta Club School of Distinction” award, which is awarded to schools "striving towards academic achievement, exemplary character, demonstrated leadership and service to others." Gateway celebrates the value of providing our students with opportunities to collaborate beyond the classroom, and within the arts as well. Select staff members organize annual "Girls on the Run" and "Boys on the Run" after-school clubs. These experiences not only improve the physical well-being of our students, but also focus on developing a positive self-esteem, showing kindness and support to others, and collaborating to achieve a common goal. To celebrate the shared support of our cultural arts programs, Gateway showcases the talents of our students. Gateway is honored to consistently have works of art lining our hallways and on display within the community. Additional experiences within the cultural arts realm include the opportunity to participate in our chorus and fiddle clubs.
