Sand Hill Elementary School is helping all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by providing a safe, caring, and academically challenging learning environment where every child can thrive. Our mission—to learn, grow, and serve—guides us as we prepare our Sandpipers to become confident, capable, and compassionate lifelong learners.
We realize this vision by maintaining high expectations for every student and fostering a culture of rigor and relevance. Through an intense focus on building strong Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and continuous professional development, our talented teachers use best practices and innovative instructional strategies to help students reach their full potential and become college- and career-ready.
With a continued focus on literacy, numeracy, and the infusion of technology, our students are developing 21st-century skills in critical thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving—skills that will positively impact their world and future. We have leveraged curriculum materials purchased the previous year to strengthen reading and math instruction in small groups, including Letterland for explicit phonics instruction in grades 4K–3. As part of our efforts to build teacher expertise in the science of reading, Sand Hill was one of five schools in the district’s first cohort to complete LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) training for K-3 teachers, our instructional coach, and administrators.
Our 2024-25 school year theme, “Limitless,” captured our belief that all students can achieve rigorous goals when provided with the right tools and support. Our dedicated teachers worked tirelessly to find the best strategies for student growth. Through the district’s one-to-one technology initiative, every student has a digital device, enabling teachers to seamlessly integrate technology into differentiated instruction and provide small-group, targeted support.
In recognition of our overall academic performance and enduring positive impact on students’ lives, the U.S. Department of Education named Sand Hill Elementary a National Blue Ribbon School in November 2024, joining 355 other schools at an awards ceremony in Washington, DC. This incredible honor reflects the dedication and hard work of our entire school community.
November 2024 also marked an exciting milestone as we broke ground on a new classroom wing, made possible by the $200 million referendum passed last spring. This addition will bring 10 new classrooms to Sand Hill, ensuring even more space for student learning and growth.
Throughout the 2024-25 school year, we continued to utilize Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) as an interim benchmark assessment. Alongside common formative assessments, this data helped our faculty and staff monitor student performance, inform instruction, and drive academic improvement. We celebrated growth and achievement at every level, with students taking ownership of their learning by setting personal academic goals.
Our commitment to fostering a positive school culture remained strong through our ongoing use of the PBIS Rewards program, which promotes positive behaviors and recognizes student achievements. Our counseling department provided essential support through classroom guidance lessons, small-group counseling, and individual check-ins as needed. Additionally, Sand Hill became a Capturing Kids’ Hearts (CKH) school during the 2024-25 year. This program has created a collaborative and positive environment where teachers and students work together to build classroom agreements and expectations.
At Sand Hill Elementary, we firmly believe that the educational responsibility for our students is shared among the school, family, and community. We are immensely grateful to all our stakeholders for their continued support and partnership in developing our future South Carolina graduates and world leaders.
