Our students come first at Jane Edwards Elementary School! We continue to help our students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate through creativity, critical thinking, communication, and community. Jane Edwards’ priorities continue to be safety, student achievement, and continuous improvement. With the support of a full time school counselor, teachers utilized the Second Steps social-emotional learning program to support student well-being. The school creed, which incorporates school wide expectations, has become inculcated in our school culture. Students were recognized as Students of the Month based on meeting expectations and exhibiting positive behavior.
Students continued to engage in personalized learning through adaptive digital content platforms: iReady, Achieve 3000, and ALEKS. As in previous school years, students participated in establishing winter and spring goals for iReady and MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) in reading and math. Students made tremendous iReady growth from fall to spring and were recognized for this achievement!
We remain focused on improving literacy at Jane Edwards Elementary School in order to meet the Charleston County School District’s goal of all children reading on grade level by 5th grade in 2027. Literacy intervention was supported by a certified literacy interventionist and BookNook, a live, virtual platform focused on creating engaging and effective learning experiences for students. Students and staff continued to log their reading minutes into the Beanstack system, leading to the school surpassing our goal. Our parents supported our focus on improving literacy and mathematics by attending this year’s Bingo for Books and Family Math Games Night. We utilized a new ELA curriculum, Amplify’s CKLA, for literacy instruction. We also continued to consult with Level Up Literacy, LLC to provide professional development and support for teachers. To support improvements in mathematics, we used Math Fact Lab and consulted with Beyond the Classroom Educational Services Inc. Our teachers continued to structure their classroom lessons for active student engagement.
This year, our student enrollment increased. We also increased our community partnerships. Local restaurants, churches, and other businesses supported student achievement with school supplies and funding of instructional field trips. Families also received support during Christmas. The community also expressed appreciation for teachers and staff throughout the school year.
Students will continue to come first at Jane Edwards Elementary School! We will continue to implement strategies to improve not only literacy and mathematics, but the overall well-being of our students and the culture of our school.
