At Matilda Dunston Elementary School, we are committed to helping every student develop the World Class Skills outlined in the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. We do this by empowering both teachers and students through critical thinking, collaboration, and a commitment to academic excellence. Our learning environment is built around rigor, hands-on experiences, and meaningful student engagement.
Our educators continue to stay at the forefront of best teaching practices, participating in ongoing professional development that includes reading and writing workshops, the Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) program, differentiated instruction, research-based interventions, and effective classroom management. We also emphasize technology integration, curriculum alignment, and data-driven decision-making to identify strengths and address areas for growth. A key focus this year has been deepening our understanding of academic standards through the Data Driven Instruction model to enhance instructional planning and assessment.
We remain dedicated to immersing students in a developmentally appropriate, literacy-rich curriculum that is both rigorous and engaging. By creating differentiated learning experiences, we aim to meet the diverse needs of our students and cultivate lifelong learners and responsible citizens. Our teachers benefit from daily common planning time, which allows for purposeful collaboration focused on curriculum design, data analysis, and individual student support.
Our Professional Learning Community (PLC) meetings continue to center on grade-level goals and instructional improvement. Through this continuous improvement cycle, teachers collaboratively examine student data, reflect on instructional practices, and identify targeted strategies to enhance learning outcomes. This ongoing process fosters a culture of shared responsibility, professional growth, and adaptability. In partnership with instructional specialists, our team works to strengthen student achievement in reading, writing, math, and the use of adaptive digital resources.
At Dunston, we believe that strong partnerships with families and community stakeholders are essential to student success. Our mentoring programs have made a meaningful impact, particularly the Heart Math program, which pairs over 40 students with community mentors to support math achievement and boost student confidence. We are proud of the growth and influence of our Distinguished Gentleman and Elite Ladies mentoring groups, which provide positive role models and support for our most at-risk students.
We look forward to continuing our collaboration with the community as we work together to prepare our students to thrive both academically and as future leaders of South Carolina.
