At Mount Pleasant Academy (MPA), our faculty and staff are dedicated to engaging students in a variety of experiences that foster learning and innovation skills, enhance information and technology skills, and support students in acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary for future success. We are unwavering in our commitment to the Charleston County School District's goal of all students reading on grade level by fifth grade in 2027.
This year at Mount Pleasant Academy, we have taken a unique approach to fostering creativity and critical thinking skills in our students. With the generous support of our PTA, we have added a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) program to our weekly enrichment classes. Students enjoy challenging engineering tasks, science lab activities tied to their core curriculum, and planning, designing and harvesting our school-wide garden. Our STEM instructor also incorporates vocabulary activities and high-interest research and read-aloud moments into her hands-on approach. This program not only fosters creativity and equips our students with world-class skills but engages students in literacy and reading activities that set them up for future success.
Our school uses adaptive, digital literacy and numeracy programs to determine students’ individual needs and personalize learning and practice. Teachers are able to use these programs to monitor students’ growth and progress toward annual typical and stretch targets. Teachers monitor student progress weekly and make changes to students’ pathways and lessons. Deeper data dives are done three times a year with the support of our reading coach. Our use of adaptive, digital content is an essential part of our literacy program.
At Mount Pleasant Academy, we strive to engage students in various learning activities that help all students develop the World-Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. Our teachers focus on activities that support student literacy and the foundational goal of reading on grade level by fifth grade.
