At Lee Central Middle School, we are committed to a shared vision of academic excellence, social responsibility, creativity, and growth of the whole child. Our mission is to prepare our students to be college and career-ready by empowering them to hope, work, and achieve their potential through engagement in rigorous and relevant learning experiences, as well as the development of authentic relationships.
Lee Central Middle School’s (LCMS) faculty, staff, students, parents, and community members are dedicated to developing our students' world-class skills, as defined in the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. Although our recent school report card reveals a notable decline, we are committed to ongoing improvement. Our daily pursuit is to ensure that our students and faculty are hopeful, well-prepared, and focused on intentionally delivering instructional practices that meet the academic, social, and emotional needs of all our students and communities. We are committed to providing a nurturing environment that fosters the continuous growth of our students and faculty.
LCMS diligently strives to provide educational opportunities that are equitable, developmentally appropriate, and challenging for all students. We strive to instill hope and confidence in our students, enabling them to grow in all endeavors through the teaching of problem-solving, critical thinking, communication, and collaborative skills.
Through careful planning and visibility, we toil to create and maintain a safe and engaging environment where students and teachers are supported in their efforts to be successful practitioners.
I-Ready, Mastery View Predictive Assessments (MVPA), and EOC scores are used to gauge student performance. We continuously analyze formative data and consistently discuss data with all stakeholders, including teachers, students, and parents. These ongoing conversations regarding data are held with our students, teachers, and parents to ensure we are informed about the progress of our schools, teachers, and individual students. These conversations encourage agency, propelling students to take ownership of their learning as the year progresses.
Our Media Specialist continues to collaborate with Language Arts Teachers to ensure that all Lee Central Middle School students have regular access to the library media center. During these visits, our Librarian provides instruction to support teachers and students. Book talks were given, and students are allowed to browse the bookshelves and select books to check out. Students visit the library individually and in small groups to check out books. Our book collection is updated annually to ensure consistency with the preferred reading selections of all students. Furthermore, we have also ordered magazines that may interest our students. Subjects newly included were politics, the economy, the armed forces, motor vehicles, sports, weather, biography, and STEM books.
Additionally, our teachers continue to focus on their individual and collective growth through ongoing professional learning activities within Professional Learning Communities (PLCs). The professional learning focus within our PLCs included various indicators from the SCTS 4.0 Rubric, teacher clarity, pacing guides, data-driven instruction, learning targets, social emotional learning, and student engagement. We also provided professional development on Cognia strategies that focus on increasing student engagement. Our goal is to use data and survey results to ensure intentional planning for instructional delivery, clarity of the objective, implementing and maintaining an appropriate pace during the lesson, and providing timely academic feedback to improve the individual overall academic needs of students.
We implemented the i-Ready (My Path program) in ELA and Math. I-Ready embedded formative assessment data provided each student with an individualized study plan based on their formative assessment performance. Students in 6th - 8th grade used i-Ready for 25 minutes daily during their Math and ELA assistance labs and during Response to Intervention (RTI) time daily. Furthermore, we placed a certified teacher in the ELA and Math assistance classes to provide spiral instruction following 2-3 weeks behind their Math & ELA teachers. We plan to continue to use i-Ready and the certified teachers in labs school-wide.
Parent nights were designed to inform parents about our SC READY school data results and their child’s data results. Data talks were held with students and parents. Hence, both understood the student’s current performance level, which indicates the student’s mastery and command of knowledge and skills as outlined in the SC grade-level standards. Parents were also provided with information to help them better understand the programs students are expected to use on a daily basis. Teachers facilitated the Parent Night Presentations.
We continuously communicate our expectations to students, faculty and staff, parents, and community members. In the future, we plan for our assistant principal of instruction to focus primarily on instructional delivery strategies and our assistant principal of behavior to focus primarily on PBIS and student incentives. This approach will enable us to better focus on student success by providing our principal with additional time to facilitate more MTSS processes and data-driven discussions with students, teachers, and parents.
