Marlboro County High School (MCHS) is dedicated to helping all students develop the World Class Skills outlined in the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by offering educational opportunities that teach, support and nurture student growth in these skills. The primary goal of Marlboro County High School is to ensure that our graduates achieve one of the Three E’s: Employment, Enrollment, or Enlistment. We strive to equip every student with the 21st Century skills necessary to be competitive in the global economy. Possessing these skills is crucial before students’ transition to college, the world of work or armed services.
We aim to raise the academic achievement of all our students through teaching across curriculums, integration of the arts, and the utilization of best practices for teaching and learning. The administrative team at Marlboro County High School models high expectations and works with faculty and staff for continuous improvement with a focus on student engagement and achievement. We also strive to meet academic, social, and emotional goals of our students each day.
Throughout the school year, students had various opportunities for students to engage in activities that promoted growth in critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity. Teachers designed lessons that fostered these world class skills, engaging students through questioning and authentic assignments. Group assignments encouraged collaboration and creativity with students being held accountable both individually and as a group. This year we focused on creating a safe and nurturing learning environment and building the support systems to increase student attendance, academic achievement, and Career and Technical Education (CTE) completers. We revised our curriculum to aligned to our standards and initiated Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) for teachers to create common assessments, analyzing benchmark data and modifying instructional practices based on the data. As a school we established instructional non-negotiables and began discussing rigor and relevance in our PLCs.
We continued our focus on improving our graduation rate by working with students and parents to remove all barriers to success. MCHS launched the Bulldawgs Boost afterschool program for students. The program offered students an opportunity to recover hours needed towards seat-time or credit loss due to course failure for classes they were enrolled in for the current school year and provided academic support for students in all subject areas.
As we focused on academic gains our students’ earned awards and recognitions in various extracurricular activities. Members of the FBLA were national qualifiers and the Beta Club earned the National Beta Club School of Merit Award. We had several athletic state qualifiers and awards. Members of our band auditioned and join the 2023-2024 Region Band. Our Future Farmers of America (FFA) placed at the state competition while our Academic Challenge Team advanced to playoff rounds.
We believe that community involvement is vital to ensuring academic success and offers additional opportunities for students to develop 21st Skills. The Beta Club, Bulldog Ambassadors, Polished Pearls, Student Government Association, Principals’ Student Advisory Council, JROTC cadets and our student athletes, played a vital role in supporting our local community through various activities such as: Red Cross Blood Drives, Community Highway Clean-up Days, and Boys Basketball Toy Drives.
We believe that there is no limit to what our students can accomplish when all stakeholders work together towards developing college and career ready South Carolina graduates that are Employed, Enrolled, or Enlisted. We will continue to strive for excellence while providing a quality education for every student. “YES, we can… and we WILL”.
