South Florence High School is home to Florence One Center for the Arts. Students from across Florence One Schools may apply for admission to our arts magnet program. Opportunities in the arts include chorus, orchestra, theater, dance, creative writing, piano, guitar, digital media design, ceramics, painting and drawing, band, and audio and video production. Students enrolled in our arts program have the opportunity to develop their talents in the arts while participating in a rigorous academic program. Students have opportunities to further explore academic and personal interests through our various extracurricular activities and clubs. Our athletics program is an integral part of our school where students learn the value of teamwork, goal setting, and perseverance. Our mission is to prepare our students to be successful both in and out of the classroom by providing them with solid academic experiences and diverse learning opportunities in an environment that focuses on having all students become creative thinkers.
Our Project Lead the Way courses include introduction to engineering, principles of engineering, civil engineering and architecture, human body systems, and principles of biomedical sciences. These course options allow students to explore careers in the areas of science, engineering, medicine, and technology. These classes provide students with the opportunity to be creative, and innovative while exploring possible career pathways.
South Florence students have access to opportunities in career development through our affiliation with Florence One's Advantage Academy. Advantage Academy offers the following certification programs for students: Emergency Medical Technician, Aviation, Certified Nursing Assistant, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, Auto Technician, and Electrical Lineman certification. The completion of these courses enables graduates to enter the workforce fully licensed to begin a career in their desired field. In 2023, 191 South Florence graduates were named Career and Technical Education Scholars.
Through a partnership with Francis Marion University, Coker College, South Carolina State, Morris College, and the College of Charleston, students have the opportunity to enroll in dual credit college courses. In addition to our dual credit options, students may also enroll in any of our 10 advanced placement courses which can potentially count as college credits for our students.
The graduating class of 2024 earned over $5.6 million in scholarships. Nine students were awarded Palmetto Fellows Scholarships, 101 students were awarded the LIFE Scholarship, and 121 students were awarded the HOPE Scholarship. Ten graduates will be entering the military upon graduation.
SFHS continues to lead the way in innovation by providing our students the opportunity to utilize technology both in class and at home through our one-to-one technology initiative. As we move forward, our goal is to provide our students with a strong foundation that will pave the way for continued success in our global society.
