Richmond Drive Elementary
Richmond Drive Elementary is helping all students develop World Class Skills as a part of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by embracing our district motto of “Rock Solid.” Together our staff strives to address the needs of each individual child in order to prepare them for thinking critically and creatively.
Richmond Drive Elementary has been a part of Rock Hill Schools for over 70 years. It is located near Winthrop University and is a true neighborhood school as it is surrounded by our families. During our years of educating children, Richmond Drive has had a variety of cultures and socio-economic backgrounds attending the school since integration.
As stated in our vision, at our school “as leaders, we strive to empower leaders that are confident, responsible, empathetic and excited to learn” as our students develop the characteristics of the South Carolina Graduate and staff grows as professionals. We believe all students can learn at high levels if engaged and given choice as well as ownership. We challenge our students by using real world problems in math and reading. We incorporate MAP testing three times a year in the area of math and reading assessments twice a year which allows teachers to gain knowledge of students needs as they prepared throughout the year.
Communication with our families and other stakeholders in our school’s progress, events and activities is an extremely vital part of who we are. To keep all parents and families abreast of news we communicate in a variety of means: meet the teacher / open house night, individual family conferences, weekly communication folders, weekly newsletters, texting and phone calls. We discovered in today’s electronic age, sending communication home in a variety of ways is most beneficial in reaching all families. Texting our families with links to our newsletters and getting feedback was our greatest means of communication.
Our SIC (School Improvement Council) plays an integral part in our school’s progress. During this year’s meetings, SIC discussed attendance concerns, discussed gaining support of families at school events, and strived to attract more participation with SIC.
With the support of our PTO (Parent Teacher Organization), we supported those within our school and reached out to the community beyond our school. PTO has created teacher appreciation days throughout the year, and held birthday celebrations for each child, and supported field day and provided a lunch for teachers just to name a few.
This year Richmond Drive Elementary partnered with Winthrop University, Kiwanis Club and several local churches and businesses. These organizations provided extra support to our students through teaching, mentoring, recognizing students, providing supplies, school clean up days and after school clubs. Being a host to Winthrop University students has given us the opportunity to give back to our community.
At Richmond Drive Elementary we worked with students to provide many opportunities for building life characteristics through beginning a journey learning Leader in Me (LiM). We are growing as listeners and communicators everyday as we focus on positive behavior. Using the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, we have begun to help our students and staff learn and grow while becoming leaders.
Richmond Drive Elementary will continue to collaborate with all stakeholders as we strive for empowering and inspiring each other to take risks to achieve our highest potential as our students become college and career ready.
