Meadowfield Elementary School is helping all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate through the positive culture of our Paideia approach. We are Meadowfield, a National Paideia Model School leader who transforms lives through problem-based learning, Socratic seminars, and student leadership. Students work collaboratively on coached projects that blend multiple state standards across the curriculum. Socratic seminars enhance student communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Students and parents engage in student-led conferences to highlight achievements, encourage ownership of learning, and develop goals for students. Our theme, “Every Child, Every Day!” focuses on building a foundation and providing resources for each student to meet his or her learning potential. Effective practices include implementing Paideia; creating a Professional Learning Community where teachers analyze instruction, data, and assessments; utilizing Reading, Writing, and Math Workshop to strengthen literacy and numeracy skills; integrating visual and performing arts; and engaging our community through outreach to parents, businesses, and faith-based partners to provide resources and opportunities for our students. Meadowfield continues to recruit and retain the best available teachers. Our instructional staff uses research-proven, effective practices in which assessment data drives all instruction. Through individual assessments, we can meet students where they are academically and move them forward. Targeted professional development is offered both at the district and school level, thereby allowing teachers to engage in growth opportunities, not only to meet his/her needs but also to meet the needs of the students in their care. Academic strides at our school include over 56% of all students meeting or exceeding expectations on the STAR Assessments in Reading and Math. In addition to this progress, our multilingual learners showed tremendous growth, as demonstrated by our state assessment ACCESS for ELLs. We also had the opportunity to continue to provide our students with additional academic support through the Midlands Reading Consortium tutors. Meadowfield connected with community sponsors and our PTO to highlight the importance of Literacy and Math in students’ everyday lives. Events such as Read Across America Week were a huge success, with readers coming into the building and activities celebrating literacy in our community.
Additionally, Publix, a local grocer, sponsored Math Night. Student leadership grows through community service projects. Students donated over 1500 pounds of food to Harvest Hope Food Bank this year. Students also learned about the March of Dimes and collected over $1400 for the organization. Fifth-grade students led and created the new and improved Mustang News Show that spotlights all grade levels with reports of classroom happenings. Students were able to participate in Art Club, Chorus, Mustang Milers, Archery Club, Orchestra, Safety Patrol, Good News Club, Vinyl Printing and Crafting, Math Club, Legos, Robotics, Chess, Grounds Crew, Student Advisory Council, Soccer, Board Games, Book Clubs, Cultural Club, Basketball, Dance, Gardening, Mural Painting, and mentor programs (Girl Talk and Distinguished Gentlemen Initiative). Meadowfield looks forward to continued growth and success for “Every Child, Every Day.”
