Horrell Hill Elementary School is in a rural community in Hopkins, South Carolina, that serves over 600 Prek-5th grade students. Our school is considered one of the largest elementary schools in Richland County School District One. It continues to grow due to new housing and economic development within our school’s zone. Our diverse student population comprises sixty-five percent African American students, sixteen percent Hispanic or Latino students, twelve percent Caucasian students, and six percent two or more races. Services are available to students identified to receive special education, advanced academic programming, English language development support, and tier 3 social-emotional interventions. Although diverse, our school’s motto is “We Believe… Success for All!” Our mascot is the Soaring Eagle, often reinforced in our school's hashtag, #WatchUsSoar.
Teachers at Horrell Hill Elementary School are highly qualified and expect all students to develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. They believe students' achievement in literacy and numeracy is everyone's responsibility. Students are engaged in schoolwide inquiry-based projects to reinforce the South Carolina Literacy and Content Standards. Research-proven strategies, interventions, extended-day, and extra-curricular activities are implemented in and beyond the classrooms. The Reading Coach and Curriculum Resource Teacher partner with faculty and staff to improve instructional practices in weekly Professional Learning Communities and staff trainings. We are also a Professional Development School in partnership with the University of South Carolina (Columbia), hosting student-teacher interns and preservice classes for education majors. Family engagement opportunities have been created through our Parent Family Engagement Specialist and our Title I Plan to include curriculum nights, extracurricular clubs, community reading events, multilingual family nights, Parent-Teacher Organizations, and the School Improvement Council.
Horrell Hill Elementary School continues to support digital learning for all students. All classrooms have wireless internet access, and laptops are available for 1:1 access. Opportunities for students to engage in coding and robotics are offered to increase their familiarity with STEM, culminating each summer during Camp Discovery, which merges literacy with science, technology, and engineering.
