Chapin Intermediate School is helping all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by focusing on learning and innovation skills paired with life and career skills during the 2023-2024 school year . The combination of fifth and sixth grades into Intermediate School allows for a unique instructional model uncommon in both the state and nation.
At CIS, we support the Profile of the S.C. Graduate by providing our students with a classroom experience that facilitates a love for the process of learning! The core content in ELA, math, science, and social studies (World-Class Knowledge) starts at the appropriate level for each learner and our highly qualified faculty imbeds creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and communication (World-Class Skills) into each activity. Staying focused on the whole child, we encourage self-direction, perseverance, and work ethic (Life and Career Characteristics) by one-on-one conversations to help each child mature into ownership of their learning.
Each year our students, faculty, and staff pursue our purpose of earning their W.I.N.G.S. This is a two year process for students and a yearly process for faculty and staff. An essential part of this process requires that each person develops their Eagle Sight and Eagle Strength. Eagle Sight focuses on how students, faculty and staff see themselves and others, while Eagle Strength focuses on each person having a growth mindset in everything that they do. This year, each group embraced this process and as a result, they have grown socially, emotionally, academically, and professionally.
Our students build critical thinking skills by participating in activities like the science fair and teacher-sponsored clubs. As a result of these and other critical thinking activities, our standardized test scores on SC Ready and SC PASS have exceeded the state average in all areas. On Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) students consistently meet or exceed yearly growth targets. Most importantly, our students gain confidence and build stepping stones to the future.
Our students practiced ethical and collaborative citizenship by exhibiting the characteristics found in the acronym W.I.N.G.S. We challenged students to Work and play responsibly, Improve themselves and their community, Never give up, Get involved, and Show respect. These characteristics were embedded in all school-wide expectations which were taught and reinforced on a daily basis. We teach students how to treat one another through our classroom guidance lessons on kindness, friendship, and conflict. Our students were rewarded for displaying these characteristics through our online-based W.I.N.G.S incentive program. Based on the principles of PBIS, the program equipped teachers with the ability to instantly reward students with digital cash for their actions and to encourage them to keep growing their Eagle Sight and Eagle Strength! The highlight of this program lies within the digital store. Students could visit a virtual store and purchase a variety of items that were delivered to their classroom weekly.
Over our nine year history, Chapin Intermediate has served the Chapin community with distinction. This year, by focusing on a shared purpose (Earn your W.I.N.G.S) and process (Eagle Sight and Eagle Strength) and carefully connecting with the years of established excellence, we maximized the momentum already built during the first eight years. Everyday students, parents, teachers, and staff worked together to help each other build their Eagle Sight and Eagle Strength and Earn Their W.I.N.G.S!
