The mission of Ocean Bay Elementary School is to empower students to embrace responsibility as they become lifelong independent thinkers and learners. The staff and faculty provide engaging and challenging curricula based on the individual readiness of each student in a safe and nurturing environment. Ocean Bay Elementary continues to emphasize the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate which provides students with the necessary tools for the future by focusing on developing world class knowledge and skills, as well as life and career characteristics. Every day students are encouraged to be responsible for their actions and learning, respectful to themselves and others and ready to do their personal best.
Ocean Bay Elementary is a school that has high expectations for every child. Teachers incorporate a cadre of instructional strategies and assessment tools to ensure the needs of each child are met. During frequent planning sessions, teachers review assessment data, monitor pacing and determine instructional next steps. Instruction is guided by various types of data including MAP, DIBELS, SC Ready, and District Common Assessments as well as informal classroom assessments and progress monitoring measures. Our leadership team continues to monitor teaching and learning with a concentration on student engagement, social emotional learning and small group instruction. They collaborate with teachers to provide data-driven and differentiated instruction at Ocean Bay Elementary. It is this approach that makes Ocean Bay Elementary such a warm, inviting, safe, and child-centered school that supports our vision of Learn, Grow, Achieve!
We are most proud of our school being recognized as a 2019 National Blue Ribbon School. Additionally, we have continued to monitor and reflect on best practices as our staff participates in ongoing professional development opportunities in English language arts, math, cooperative learning, and strategies to support multilingual learners. These best practices are evidenced by student achievement results as well as awards our students have earned.
Ocean Bay Elementary students participated in several school-wide activities during the 2023-2024 school year to build and promote social emotional learning, positive school culture, and a sense of community. A few of this year’s highlights include: Booster Fun-Run Fundraiser, Red Ribbon Week, Field Day, Boom City Tournament, Family Literacy Night, Science Night, and Family Fitness Night. Students were encouraged to participate in school-sponsored extracurricular activities which included: Percussion Club, Choir, Art Club, Robotics Club, Dolphin Garden Club, Yearbook Club, Rubik's Cube Club, and Patriots Club. Our school participated in Read Across America by engaging in reading activities such as our Book Character Parade and welcoming guest readers throughout the year. Ocean Bay Elementary was proud to have over 100 students submit technology projects and more than 50 students qualify to compete in the district’s Technology Fair this year. Additionally, 10 students participated in the Rubiks Cube Competition at the Technology Fair.
Parent and community support at Ocean Bay Elementary is outstanding. Our parents, community members, and local businesses have provided an overwhelming amount of support through their time, talents, and gifts. The PTO has honored student success in a variety of ways as well as provided many resources for our classrooms and new playground equipment for our growing student population. The PTO sponsored several events throughout the school year including: Family Day at the Bay, the Holiday Luncheon, a Cereal Drive and Domino Run, Doughnuts with Grownups, and Fifth Grade Celebratory Events. The PTO and school improvement team focused their efforts on activities that promoted a positive school culture and teacher morale. Local churches and organizations continue to aid our students by providing school supplies, backpacks, and donations. Ocean Bay Elementary believes that we must all work together for our students to be successful as they continue to Learn, Grow, and Achieve.
