Fennell Elementary Magnet School Report to the Parents
Here at Fennell Elementary Magnet School, we endeavor to partner with the parents and community of Yemassee, SC in order to foster a safe, nurturing environment conducive to learning for all of our students. We provide standards-based instruction, so that students will achieve success through a variety of opportunities to develop independent learning skills, creative problem-solving strategies, and a sense of responsibility while respecting the diversity of others. We offer opportunities for students to be engaged in creative arts and various STEAM activities. We are currently operating with 2 state-of-the-art computer labs with acellus robots.
Fennell Elementary Magnet School is a Pre-kindergarten through sixth grade school with approximately 135 students located within a small rural community. Our school vision, "We aim to motivate, empower, and support everyone, every day, in every way to be productive 21st century citizens." The faculty/staff can be seen daily collaborating in Professional Learning Communities. Teams of teachers work together to plan lessons, review data to identify the needs of our students, and utilize best instructional practices. The leadership team has implemented a daily intervention/period at each grade level. This intervention strategy allows all students (Tier 1 through Tier 3) to receive data-driven assistance they need daily, during the school day.
Our curriculum is designed to infuse literacy throughout the day in all subject areas. The schedule is set with allotted times throughout the school day for reading workshops, learning centers, STEAM activities, as well as a music/art program. Each classroom has a collection of leveled reading materials that is thematically labeled. Learning stations are strategically placed within the classrooms with motivational learning activities for the students. Fennell Elementary employs a reading coach and a reading interventionist that effectively utilize strategies to promote active learning.
In the area of reading and mathematics, our curriculum is delivered during an uninterrupted 90-minute block of instruction for grades K-6 with a focus on the individual and diverse needs of our students.
We are providing opportunities for all students to engage in hands-on experiences, critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity by using active learning components such as:
- School/Community Garden (Outdoor Classroom)
- State of the art greenhouse
- State of the art technology (Steam Lab, Acellus Lab, Promethean Boards).
- Staff/Student Mentoring Program
- Community/School Partnership
- 1:1 Technology Approach
In order to assure that our students feel safe, our faculty has taken a proactive approach to ensure that bullying is not tolerated. Our school counselor will complete classroom lessons at all grade levels to teach students the procedures to identify, report and prevent harassment, intimidation and bullying. This information will also be shared with staff and parents through meetings and workshops. Our students will also participate in school assemblies to reinforce anti-bullying and character education with the guidance department and the school’s SRO.
