Our school is helping all students develop world class skills and life and career characteristics of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by continuing to focus on the four key areas of being a National School to Watch, which include being academically excellent, socially equitable, developmentally responsive, and being organized for learning. While undergoing a multi-million dollar construction project and displacement, Fulmer Middle School continued to provide high quality instruction, interventions, and systems designed for all adolescent learners.
Our Fine Arts department continued to excel in all areas. Student artwork was displayed at local businesses and garnered numerous awards at the State Fair. Our Strings, Chorus, and Band students participated in Solo and Ensemble, as well as the Carowinds Music Festival, with a number of students receiving Superior and Excellent ratings. The Technology Student Association also achieved numerous recognitions at the state-level in all areas of pre-engineering. Fulmer Middle School implemented AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) College Readiness System throughout the 2018-2019 school year. As an environment that focuses on college and career readiness for all learners, various goals were achieved in building an effective AVID elective class for 132 sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students, providing a focused note-taking system for all students through the use of Cornell notes, and transforming our physical environment into a celebration of college awareness. All students had access to critical thinking opportunities, through reading, writing, and speaking, in order to prepare them for learning now and in their future.
Fulmer Middle School is one of nineteen schools in the Midlands to be recognized as a Professional Development School through the University of South Carolina. This partnership has allowed us to provide robust professional development opportunities for practicing teachers, as well as a "sandbox" for preservice teachers to learn and grow in their practice in our dynamic environment. Numerous opportunities for statewide and national attention in the area of middle level instruction was given to our school community through this partnership.
The faculty and staff of Fulmer Middle School is pleased to recognize five National Board Certified teachers. Numerous teachers presented high-quality instructional strategies at the SC Association for Middle Level Education conference in March, as well as the STAR Teacher program through the Palmetto State Teachers Association. Our faculty continues to maintain partnerships with the University of South Carolina and Midlands Technical College to immerse aspiring teachers into a dynamic middle level environment. At Fulmer Middle School, our focus is on student learning. We continually strive to be academically excellent, socially equitable, and developmentally responsive so that all of our students have the opportunity to learn and grow in an environment that is designed for adolescent learners. We continue to analyze our assessment and perception data for the purpose of improving our practices and to ensure that we continue on our trajectory of excellence.
