Hughes Academy of Science and Technology is helping all students develop world class skills and life and career characteristics of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by providing a safe, caring, and academically challenging learning environment. We provide such an environment through the implementation of our school's collective vision, which states that Hughes Academy is a diverse and collaborative community developing growth-minded learners. We demonstrate this vision by challenging our students with best practices to reach their full potential and by the continuous professional development of our teachers.
Our teachers are always seeking to learn new and effective strategies to use in the classroom such as STEAM, Project Based Learning initiatives, and other student centered approaches. Our teachers understand the importance of the creative process and design model, which allows students to ask, imagine, plan, create, and improve in order to reach their full potential. We have partnered with businesses who provide representatives to guide our students through real world application. This allows our students to work within teams, developing 21st century skills.
At Hughes Academy of Science and Technology, we have various programs which focus on developing the whole child. We have partnered with Mentor Upstate to develop and implement a mentoring program to better reach our at-risk population. We have also added a peer tutoring program, single-gender leadership clubs for at-risk students, and a formalized intervention protocol. We believe it is imperative that our students learn what it means to be a leader and that these skills will help to ensure success in life. We continually focus on positive behavior interventions using a school wide behavior management system where we focus on Respect, Order, Communication, and Kindness (ROCK). We also provide weekend meals for food insecure students and families through our HAK PAK program. Our students participate in a variety of extracurricular activities, including Lego League Robotics, Minecraft Club, Battle of the Brains, Math Counts, Beta Club, Theater Club, and a variety of athletic programs.
We believe the school, family, and community must work as one team to provide a quality education at Hughes Academy. This is evidenced by our recent recognition as a National PTSA School of Excellence and the twelve thousand hours of volunteer work that was completed last year alone. Our SIC and PTSA are involved in decisions regarding program development, community needs, and student activities. We couldn’t be successful without the tremendous support that we receive from our parents and community members. Thank you for your continued support of public education and Hughes Academy of Science and Technology.
