Dr. Ronald E. McNair School of Digital Communication and Leadership strives to help all students develop the world class skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by creating an environment with high expectations for all students in the areas of academics, social emotional development, and career exploration. We accomplish this through providing leadership opportunities, career exploration, and preserving an environment where learning is the first priority. We integrate research-proven strategies in every classroom, provide social emotional counseling and academic interventions, as well as offer a variety of extracurricular activities for students.
Providing students with authentic digital and leadership opportunities within the school and in the community affords our students the ability to grow in areas that will prepare them for the 21st Century. Utilizing a 1:1 environment has proven to be a successful formula with our students. Implementing the Leader in Me provides all students an opportunity to grow as leaders in many different capacities. A daily advisor/advisee period provides students with a small group to discuss their academic data, work on individual behavior goals, and improve their leadership skills through learning and applying the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. These opportunities assist students in learning how to become better communicators with their peers and facilitators, how to collaborate as a team member working toward common goals, how to exercise their creative spirits in a way that is conducive to their learning and that of their classmates, and constantly challenges them to think critically in their approach to solving problems.
Our teachers continue to participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to enhance their pedagogical practices and their ability to analyze data to intentionally drive instruction. In addition to school and district level professional development opportunities, many of our faculty members were able to participate in off-site PD and/or conferences sponsored by the South Carolina Department of Education, the Leader in Me, South Carolina International Reading Association, the South Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics Conference, South Carolina Council for the Social Studies Conference, Education and Business Summit, and National Model School Conference.
