Morningside Middle School is committed to the development of world-class skills, as well as the life and career characteristics of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by providing a safe, caring, and academically challenging learning environment. Our scholars are introduced to a variety of career fields and are consistently made aware of the opportunities afforded with a college education. Scholars are exposed to a variety of college campuses and career opportunities through numerous field trips during the school year. Scholars enrolled at Morningside have the opportunity to earn up to four high school Carnegie units while in attendance. The staff has committed to providing the best education so scholars can excel in the “super skills” of the 21st Century “4 C’s”.
This school year, Morningside Middle School continued its partnership with the Liberty Hill STEM Initiative, a community-led consortium. This partnership has provided the school the opportunity to work with local leaders and community businesses to expand the STEM initiative. The result has been increased STEM offerings at MMS to include classes that focus on the design, modeling, and creation of automated projects. This has become a popular class that has impacted the critical thinking skills of our scholars. The excitement for the creativity and ingenuity of the engineering classes led to the growth of our robotics team – The Mustang Machine. The scholars and their coaches participated in a number of local competitions that involved using creative deduction to problem solve and then complete rigorous tasks. Ultimately, due to the commitment of the teachers, school district, and our community partners, Morningside was named a Project Lead the Way School of Distinction.
In addition to the STEM project, Morningside Middle School has furthered its school-wide approach to the AVID program. This program includes an elective class that is geared towards providing first-generation college attendees with the skills necessary to succeed in college and career. The program uses a collaborative approach to encourage scholars to work together to synthesize their knowledge, come to a consensus, and be task-oriented. The elective classes served 76 scholars this year and led to an increase in opportunities for rigorous coursework. Additionally, the writing, reading, and inquiry tenets of the programs were expanded into core classes.
Morningside Middle School seeks to uncover the limitless possibilities that exist in each of our scholars. We work with talented children, dedicated parents, an engaged community, and a staff of compassionate professionals to achieve our goals. Together, this school will continue to grow ever stronger in the development of future South Carolina graduates. I am humbled to serve the community as principal of Morningside Middle School and will continue to share our vision and to lead with pride.
