South Carolina Virtual Charter School (SCVCS) is a public virtual charter school serving students in grades K-12. SCVCS opened in 2008-2009 and has successfully completed its tenth year of operation. SCVCS is helping develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by offering a robust and challenging online curriculum to K-12 students throughout the state. All courses meet state and national standards while providing a degree of flexibility to meet the individual student’s learning style.
During the 2018-2019 school year SCVCS underwent a comprehensive review of our instructional delivery system by NCAA and was granted NCAA status, whereby high school student athletes coursework was accepted to the higher education institution to be eligible to participate. Additionally, SCVCS is fully accredited by AdvancED, a national and international educational accreditation agency considered a gold standard in the field of education.
SCVCS provides live online classes and class work. All courses are taught online by SC fully-certified, highly-qualified, experienced South Carolina educators. Approximately 3,156 students were enrolled with SCVCS in 2018-19. Learning coaches, parents and students conference regularly via Blackboard Collaborate, telephone calls, and E-Mail. Students are offered social outings, field trips and Academic outings throughout the year. Over 1,000 students enrolled in grades K-8 with the option of enrolling a wide range of academic courses as well as electives such as Art, Music, PE.
At the high school, courses are offered on a traditional year-long, 180 day schedule as well as a semester or block schedule. Students are able to choose from a variety of college preparatory, advanced placement, honors courses and CATE classes. In 2019 SCVCS had its largest graduating class with 276 seniors earning diplomas. The class had over $3 million dollars in scholarship offers, with many students qualifying as Palmetto Fellows scholar nominees. Many graduating seniors qualified for the Life scholarship.
All students participate in state testing, taking SCReady, PASS, ACT, Work Keys and End of Course Assessments. Our student’s ACT and SAT scores continue to increase. Our students also have the opportunity to participate in PSAT. Overall, SCVCS students have performed well on all state testing.
Our school will continue to help students develop the World Class skills of the Profile of SC Graduate by bringing the plethora of online resources available to students in a virtual setting. We continue to provide a high quality educational opportunity that ensure the academic success of our young people in the global world.
