At D. W. Daniel High School, we strive to provide our students with classes and opportunities that will challenge them to grow, learn, and adapt. We believe that with every experience we offer our students, we are better preparing them for life as a 21st century citizen of the world. We continue to offer courses and extra-curricular activities that focus on teaching our students the skills needed to be successful adults.
During the 2018-2019 school year, we expanded our Advanced Placement program to offer more opportunities for students to explore critical thinking in a “college like” setting. In May of 2019, we administered more AP tests than have been administered in any past year. As a faculty, we engaged in professional development on increasing rigor and critical thinking; teachers then implemented this into their curriculum. We explored using collaborative teaching in our courses and found that bringing in two experts to a class allows more opportunity for students to communicate with their teacher and more time for individual needs to be addressed. We expanded the amount of courses we offer that engage our students through the arts, technology, and sciences proving that finding a connection with student interests increases engagement. We designed a new Business Operations Management Career Completer Pathway, with career certification opportunities in Microburst Soft skills that will allow our students to work on their employability skills. We significantly increased the amount of clubs and after school activities that our students can decide to join. For our students interested in the Performing Arts, we added a new Dance Team and Theatre Troupe. We believe that as we continue to expand our course and activity offerings, we will continue to find ways to reach the individual interests of our students, and provide a myriad of ways in which a student can be exposed to, and learn about, different future careers and lifestyles.
Our students continue to impress us with their performance on standardized tests, on the athletic fields, through AFJROTC, in performances, and in the classroom. Our students outperformed their peers on AP tests and their End of Course Exams. Our Algebra 1 EOC scores improved by over 10% from 2018 to 2019. Our US History, English 1 and Biology End of Course exams consistently remain high. Over 75% of the students enrolled in an AP course passed with a score of “3” or higher. One of our largest accomplishments is that we had over 90% of our students graduate from high school in four years. The majority of our athletic teams won their regions, with our Girls Golf and Girls Cross Country teams winning State Championships. Our Arts programs competed across the state and won many different accolades for performances in Concert Festivals, Chorale Programs, Theater Competitions, and Marching Band Competitions. Within our clubs, our students found ways to engage in philanthropy, help the environment, learn leadership skills, and become more involved in their community and school. Our students truly maximized their time in the classroom and after school by being involved in every aspect of high school life.
We look forward to the 2019-2020 school year. We expect to see the same growth and success in our school.
