Hanahan High School, located in southern Berkeley County, serves approximately 1,000 students from the Hanahan community. In conjunction with the School Improvement Council, PTSA, and Booster Clubs, the school’s faculty and staff strive to improve Hanahan High School every year. Our school is helping develop the world-class skills and life & career characteristics defined by the profile of a South Carolina Graduate. In doing so, we are providing a safe and caring instructional environment that emphasizes academic rigor, high expectations and relevance at a global educational level. Our school’s mission and vision is to prepare its’ students for a highly competitive world. Building authentic and positive relationships between students, faculty, staff, and stakeholders alike, HHS strives to provide the total high school experience. The curriculum offered is designed to maintain a focus on career and college-preparedness, while serving the diverse needs of our students. Our assessment data regularly shows academic growth and achievement directly linked to our vision of challenging and empowering students to be successful. Students benefit from access to a variety of Advanced Placement, Honors, College Prep, Dual Credit, and Career Technical Education courses. HHS is proud to have raised enrollment in our AP and honors classes while also expanding course offerings in the CTE department. We provide opportunities for our students in 11 AP courses and 40 honors level courses, along with countless college dual credit courses offered locally and online. Specialized programs offered at Hanahan High include Automotive Technology, Media Technology, Computer Science, Sports Medicine, Health Science, Digital Arts and Design, Hospitality and Tourism, and Engineering. In addition, our Mental Health Counselor provides valuable support on a daily basis as she serves students and families in need.
One of the goals of HHS is to build collaborative relationships between students, teachers, administrators, counselors, parents, and the community. Our desired outcome in establishing and maintaining these relationships, in conjunction with support systems put in place, is that all students would achieve higher academic success.
While we work to provide rigorous academic and career driven instruction, our students are involved in community service and leadership opportunities through our athletics, fine arts programs, JROTC, National Honor Society, Renaissance Club, Beta Club, Hanahan Cares, Club Joy and other academic, social, and community based clubs/groups. Our students and staff came together and collected supplies for the Ronald McDonald House of Charleston. They came together to grieve the passing of a classmate and provide financial assistance for her family. They fed over three hundred Senior Citizens holiday meals. MUSC and Boeing recognized Hanahan High School for our student and staff wellness program, which included a 5K scholarship fundraiser, in memory of a beloved teacher. Our Hanahan Cares Club continued to provide food and clothing for students and families in need.
Our graduation rate is consistently 87% and above. All teachers and administrators at HHS are highly qualified and approximately 75% of all teachers have advanced degrees. 22% of the teachers at HHS are National Board Certified and approximately 90% of the teachers are on continuing contract. The stability and high qualifications of the HHS faculty and staff lend to the strong, positive school climate felt by teachers, students, and parents alike.
We have continued to earn recognition on a state and national level with student participation in various organizations, clubs and teams. Hanahan High School consistently exceeds district and state averages for the SAT and ACT scores. Our students are successful in a wide array of extracurricular offerings. The Marching Pride Band consistently receives high marks at the SCBDA Region 5, All County, All State, Lower State, and State AAA levels. Our Theater program continues to excel, qualifying students at the national level. Our athletic teams remain competitive at the region and state competitions. The 2020 graduating class of HHS earned over $4 million dollars in both academic and athletic scholarships. The graduating class had 41 Berkeley County Honors Certificate recipients, 14 Palmetto Fellows Scholars, 11 students earned the South Carolina Academic Honors Award, and 53 students scored at least 1100 on the SAT and/or 24 on the ACT. Our parents, faculty, staff, and school communities continue to work together to make a difference for all of our students.
