Throughout the 2018-19 school year, Woodruff Elementary School's (WES) faculty and staff encouraged all students to develop World Class Skills of the Profile of a South Carolina Graduate. This was accomplished by continuing to present rigorous standards particularly in English Language Arts and Mathematics. As evidenced in our 2017-18 SC READY and SC PASS scores, Woodruff Elementary students are being challenged daily and are meeting these expectations. WES improved its technology usage by increasing the number of devices significantly during the 2018-19 school year. This allowed teachers to implement collaboration and teamwork daily. Teachers increased differentiated small group instruction in reading and math. During the time students were not involved in explicit small group instruction, they were immersed in targeted tasks within groups in order to improve problem solving while communicating and disseminating new information. Students were continuously challenged to investigate tasks by utilizing critical thinking skills through the use of technology.
WES offers many extracurricular activities for our students and their families. A sampling of these activities are academic recognition ceremonies, 4-H Junior Master Gardeners, Girls on the Run, Boys and Girls Basketball Clubs, Donuts for Dads, Muffins for Moms, and a Family Literacy Night. Our WES School Improvement Counsel (SIC) meets monthly to discuss new and innovative ways to reach our greatest potential. The SIC focus remained on improving school and parent communication, as well as, encouraging parental support. The SIC administered multiple surveys to parents as an avenue to express ideas, concerns, and needs. One particular survey result from parents was the request to change from quarterly recognition programs to semester programs which will be implemented in the 2019-20 school year..
Through vertical tracking of students who attended WES, data demonstrates students continue to perform well in advanced classes at both the middle and high school levels. By focusing on our purpose statement where we are driven to "... Create a community of learners where each student is provided with a quality education in a safe, supportive environment that promotes self-discipline, motivation, and excellence in learning to manage life's challenges successfully", we believe WES will set forth students who will be successful graduates, productive citizens. and reflect World Class Skills of the Profile of a South Carolina Graduate.
